Excerpt:

We’re both unique beings. One of a kind, that monster called us. I learned… in prison, our families brought us together because they thought we’d understand each other. They hoped we’d become friends then lovers, then, we’d get married.” Serin sighed. His breath went straight to Jade’s head. “I was on my way home one day. They took me. They made me watch while my only friend grew up and forget about me. I watched while Mom lost the will to do anything. She died alone and heartbroken. I saw those humans kill your parents. I was forced to watch the disrespect their bodies received.”

Jade felt his voice everywhere.

Serin touched his lips across her jaw. He rested his forehead against hers. How did he know how to kiss like that?

I missed you, Jade.”

He kissed her lips.

She needed to think. He needed to let her go. She had to process this. Serin wouldn’t let her go. She didn’t want him to release her. She never felt this warm, even with Mom and Dad.
He pulled away. The sudden coldest wasn’t welcome.

Q & A with Auden Johnson

What was the hardest part of writing this book? Visible Through Darkness, Book 1 of The Jura series, started as a 5,000 word standalone story. I felt that was too short to sell so I needed to make it longer. The original story ended on a “new beginning” kind of note so there was room to expand. I kept getting stuck whenever I tried writing. The ideas weren’t coming. I worked in short bursts, taking long breaks. Eventually, I got enough inspiration to get in a couple of good writing sessions and finish this story. What did you enjoy most about writing this book? Writing Jade and Serin’s interactions. Both of them are sweet, feisty and damaged. Having spent so much time alone, Serin is bad at interacting with people. He can come off as commanding. Jade’s like, “He was imprisoned for twenty years. Let’s pick our battles.” It doesn’t always work since Serin will say or do something that’ll hit one of Jade’s bad memories. They’re starving for attention so they cuddle and kiss often even though they haven’t establish a relationship. They like each other as friends but they don’t think past that. Jade and Serin are going a bit out of order but this is all new to them. What do your plans for future projects include? At this point, I don’t see The Jura series ending any time soon. I’m already working on Book 4 in my head. Also, I’ll be releasing a book called The Unburned Island next month. It’s a paranormal/dark fantasy story with some romance in it. Magical characters are investigating a haunted island. This is the first book in a series I think will keep going for a while. Do you ever get writer’s Block? Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block? I never call it writer’s block because it sounds like this mountain I can’t climb. I call it getting stuck. Yeah, I’ve gotten stuck a few times. I usually do something unrelated to my story like go for a walk or I’ll go on Pinterest and look up fantasy/horror images to see if something rouses my muse. Have you ever had one character you wanted to go one way with but after the book was done the character was totally different? At first, Jade was supposed to be an ordinary woman saving a strange magical man who’s been imprisoned for several years. As the story progressed, Jade discovered she had powers as well. I never intended that to happen. I had to go back to the beginning of the story and insert clues so it wouldn’t feel like this reveal came out of nowhere.

Virtual Book Tour: Evanthia's Gift & Waiting for Aegina by Effie Kammenou

Women’s fiction/ contemporary romance
Date Published: August 7, 2015

In the year 1956, Anastacia Fotopoulos finds herself pregnant and betrayed, fleeing from a bad marriage. With the love and support of her dear friends Stavros and Soula Papadakis, Ana is able to face the challenges of single motherhood. Left with emotional wounds, she resists her growing affection for Alexandros Giannakos, an old acquaintance. But his persistence and unconditional love for Ana and her child is eventually rewarded and his love is returned. In a misguided, but well-intentioned effort to protect the ones they love, both Ana and Alex keep secrets - ones that could threaten the delicate balance of their family.

The story continues in the 1970’s as Dean and Demi Papadakis, and Sophia Giannakos attempt to negotiate between two cultures. Now Greek-American teenagers, Sophia and Dean, who have shared a special connection since childhood, become lovers. Sophia is shattered when Dean rebels against the pressure his father places on him to uphold his Greek heritage and hides his feelings for her. When he pulls away from his family, culture and ultimately his love for her, Sophia is left with no choice but to find a life different from the one she’d hoped for.

EVANTHIA’S GIFT
is a multigenerational love story spanning fifty years and crossing two continents, chronicling the lives that unify two families.

Review:
5 stars

Evanthia’s Gift was a beautifully written two generation Greek-American love story, once I started reading it, I hated to put it down. The book starts out with Ana & Alex’s love story, what a wonderful love that was, Alex had loved Ana from the first time he met her in college but never let his feelings known and lost his opportunity when she married another. They meet few years later through a mutual friend and this time he never let the opportunity get away this time. You could just feel how much Alex loved & cherished Ana & her daughter Sophia, who he adopted, he would not stop until Ana trusted & loved him. I could just feel the pain the couple went through early in their marriage, it almost destroyed them but as a couple they love was more powerful than it was before the tragedy. I loved Alex & Ana’s story but to me the best was yet to come with Sophia & Dean’s story.

Sophia & Dean’s love story there was so many ups & downs, when you finally thought yes a big NO came. Dean had always thought of Sophia as another sister along with his own sister. They were always together, with their parents being best friends, more like family, living next door to each other, family functions & Sophia as far as she could remember Dean was always her “Dino” & she always loved him, until one kiss that changed it all.

There was so many times I wanted to go through the book & wring Dean’s neck, shake him until he finally realized what was right in front of him. But eventually, many years later, he did it for me finally opened his eyes and realized what truly mattered in life.

This book took me on an emotional roller coaster, I was laughing, yelling at the characters, and find myself crying. I also loved learning so much Greek history, I myself never knew their was Greek Jews, and the struggles that Greeks had to through to keep their beliefs. If you are looking for a beautiful love story that will take you away on a emotional rollercoaster, that expands over 50 years, I recommend you grab a copy of Evanthia’s Gift today! Effie Kammenou has earned a new fan in this reader & I can not wait to get my hand’s on the next book in the The Gift Saga!

Book Two in The Gift Saga: The continuation of Evanthia’s Gift…

In 1961, five little girls moved into a suburban neighborhood and became inseparable, lifelong friends. They called themselves the ‘Honey Hill Girls,’ named after the street on which they lived. As teenagers they shared one another’s ambitions and dreams, secrets and heartaches. Now, more than thirty years later, they remain devoted and loyal, supporting each other through triumphs and sorrows.

Evanthia's Gift follows the life of Sophia Giannakos. In Waiting for Aegina the saga continues from the perspectives of Sophia and her friends as the story drifts back and forth in time, filling in the gaps as the women grow to adulthood.

Naive teenage ideals are later challenged by harsh realities, as each of their lives takes unexpected turns. Now nearing their fiftieth year, Sophia, Demi, Amy, Mindy and Donna stand together through life-altering obstacles while they try to regain the lighthearted optimism of their youth.

All I can say is WOW! When I thought Effie Kammenou could not take me on another emotional rollercoaster after reading her debut novel Evanthia’s Gift, I was mistakenly wrong! Waiting For Aegina took me on a very emotional rollercoaster ride from the very beginning. Just when you thought everything was going to turn out for the “Honey Hill Girls”, BAM something just brought you to tears. One moment you were in tears and the next you felt all warm inside and BAM another tearful moment.

Waiting for Aegina is a continuation of Evanthia’s Gift, it picks up after Dean and Sophia’s wedding after the first chapter. It covers six years of Sophia, Demi, Donna, Mindy and Amy’s lives about their true friendship, always being there if it was only one or all of the girls, each girl was only a phone call away. Each one was going through their own life struggles but was always their when their friend needed them the most, even when on of that friend wasn’t open about it they were so close they knew when one of them need to step up for them. I loved the continuation of Sophia & Dean’s romance it was a delight to watch their love & commitment continue. And Demi never changes she tells it like it is doesn’t hold back, I love all the women but Demi has become my favorite I see a little of myself in her.

Waiting for Aegina is a beautiful written story about true friendship between five women that you watch develop in Evanthia’s Gift and stayed strong for over 30 years with a little love and romance thrown in. Waiting for Aegina is stand alone read but I recommend you read Evanthia’s Gift to understand some of the moments in the book but not necessary. If you are looking for wonderful, emotional friendship book I recommend you grab a copy of Waiting for Aegina & while you are at pick up Evanthia’s Gift both are wonderfully written. This is one reader who is waiting patiently for the Gift Saga to continue.

I received a free copy in for my review!

Effie Kammenou is a believer that it is never too late to chase your dreams, follow your heart or change your career. She is proof of that. At one time, long ago, she'd thought that, by her age, she would have had an Oscar in her hand after a successful career as an actor. Instead, she worked in the optical field for 40 years and is the proud mother of two accomplished young women.

Her debut novel, Evanthia’s Gift, is a women’s fiction multigenerational love story and family saga, influenced by her Greek heritage, and the many real life accounts that have been passed down. She continues to pick her father’s brain for stories of his family’s life in Lesvos, Greece, and their journey to America. Her interview with him was published in a nationally circulated magazine.

Evanthia’s Gift: Book One in The Gift Saga was a 2016 award finalist in the Readers Favorite Awards in the Women’s Fiction category. Waiting for Aegina: Book Two in The Gift Saga is Kammenou’s latest release.

I know I shouldn't want her, but like her namesake she's an itch I need to scratch.

Guardian Remy Blake Teaser 4.jpg

EXCERPT

She clings to me like a second skin once we’re on the highway. Riding with her plastered against my back, her pussy pressed against my ass is like the best foreplay ever. I wish I could take advantage of the build up when we get home. There’s nothing I like better than to fuck after riding.
By the time I park the bike in the garage and put both helmets away, Ivy is already inside the house. Removing my boots at the door, I walk to the kitchen in search of a beer. It’s hot as hell out there, today.
Ivy’s in the kitchen drinking water from a bottle, her head tipped back exposing her smooth neck. I stop in my tracks, looking her over from her wind blown hair all the way down to her sexy little feet.
She finishes her drink and notices me there. A smile breaks out over her face and she rapidly closes the distance between us. “I had so much fun, Brock,” she smiles and throws her arms around my neck. My arms wrap around her like they have a mind of their own and my hands caress up and down the middle of her back. Each time they get dangerously close to her ass.
She lifts her head from my chest and stares at my lips. It’s an invitation that’s impossible to miss and impossible to turn down. Leaning forward, I brush our mouths together and pause, waiting for her to change her mind. Her hands on the back of my neck urge me down to kiss her again. Slamming our lips together with an out of control need, I grip strands of her hair between my fingers and hold her head in place.
Our tongues tangle and she wiggles her sexy little body against me. Her nipples brush back and forth on my chest making my cock hard as nails. My hands release her hair and trail down to cup her round ass. I scoop her up as if she weighs no more than a feather. She wraps her legs around my hips and rubs her pussy against my cock. Two steps bring me to the kitchen counter where I set her down. Our mouths never lose contact. We’ve both been fighting this attraction since day one. We kiss as if we’re starved for each other. This moment was inevitable.
Her hands slip under my t-shirt, her fingers tease my skin along the waistband of my jeans. Fuck. I want her so bad. I want to strip us both of all our clothes and impale her on my cock. I want to fuck her harder than Jude or anyone else ever has. Instead, I catch her hands in mine, pulling them behind her back. “Lean back on your palms,” I tell her, guiding them to the counter. She listens and it makes me want her even more. The position she’s in has her chest thrusting forward. Slowly, I lift her shirt and then undo her bra. Her naked tits are the hottest I’ve ever seen. The tips hard and begging for my mouth to close around them. My hands cradle her as my mouth lowers to take one nipple between my lips. She moans and arches her back more. Moving to the other nipple I suck the hard tip into my mouth and then let my tongue circle around it. “Yes,” she gasps.
My hand moves to her stomach, sliding down to toy with the button on her pants. Glancing down at her, our eyes lock and I can see she wants this as bad as I do.
“Please,” she whispers. My fingers undo the button and as my thumb and index finger grip the tab on her zipper a knock on the front door has me freezing in place.
“Don’t stop, Brock,” she begs, but the interruption has the effect of an ice bucket dumped over my head.
I shake my head. “This never should have happened.” Turning away, I leave her seated on the counter and head to the front door. Opening it I find Jude standing there.
“Hi, is Ivy here?”
I cross my arms over my chest and shake my head. Just what I fucking need. This dude sniffing around her again. “Yeah, come in.” I gesture for him to enter. “I’ll grab her for you.”
I move back toward the kitchen my pace quick. I find Ivy still sitting on the counter, but her clothes are back in place. “Jude’s here,” I say.
She smiles. “He is?” she questions her face lighting up at the thought of spending time with him. I scowl. She scoots forward and lowers herself to the floor in a rush to get to him..
“Ivy,” I call her name. She glances up at me. “Don’t let him put his hands on you.”

Naomi

She sensed it before she heard the news. She could feel it deep in her bones. All night long she had tossed and turned, unable to find sleep.
Nick.
“No,” Naomi wailed into her pillow, pounding her fists.
No. But, of course, she knew it was true. After all, she had a sixth sense about things such as this. Damn, Nick. Why? How?
It had been several months since she had taken in his disheveled form, those cowardly eyes scanning her face, pleading for forgiveness from the other side of the depressing, stained, plastic divider at the county jail.
Forgiveness that was difficult to give, although she had been working on it. Too late, Nick. It’s way too late for you now. Part of Naomi’s heart ached for Nick’s troubled soul. For the troubled child he had once been.
Another part turned cold as she conjured up his face in her mind. As she had woken from a fitful night’s sleep, the image of Nick crying out, lost in the empty dark place where challenged souls lacked peace and closure, was too overwhelming to dismiss as a bad dream.
“Bryce.” Naomi spoke his name aloud, even though her fiancĂ© was most likely sound asleep at his house just up the dirt road.
She needed Bryce.
But Naomi knew Bryce would have to wait. Right after her first cup of coffee, she would have to call Officer Marty to confirm the facts of what she already knew to be true.
How had it happened? Possibilities swirled through her mind. Endless scenarios came forth. It could be anything. Nick had been doing time for his part in the cover-up of Maggie Field’s death. Prisons could be dangerous, particularly for someone like Nick, a man who struggled to keep his emotions in check and often had difficulty conforming to the rules.
One with a dark, menacing presence.
One with attitude.
Memories of the not so distant past slammed Naomi. Images of Ryan and Maggie . . .
Maggie.
The ghost that had all but consumed her. Maggie had reached out to Naomi, demanding peace. Naomi admitted to herself that she had become obsessed at that time in her life. Preoccupied with putting both Maggie and Ryan to rest. Luckily, Bryce was loyal and patient to the core during the first hectic months of their new relationship.
What would he say now, knowing that a spirit was back? Knowing that this time it wasn’t the sweet spirit of a girl named Maggie or a quirky, kindhearted man that needed her help?
This time it was worse, far worse.
This time the spirit was unsettled, tortured—and to make matters even more daunting . . .
He was her ex-boyfriend.
Would Bryce be as understanding about Nick as he had been with Maggie and Ryan? Hopping up out of her bed to make her cup of coffee, Naomi figured she was about to find out.

***
Moments after she hung up the phone with her friend, Officer Miriam Marty, Naomi reached for her coffee mug but then placed it back on the counter with a gentle thud.
Damn, Nick.
Miriam had confirmed Naomi’s worst suspicions and provided the bare facts surrounding Nick’s death.
He was, indeed, dead. But the strange thing about it was that it appeared to have been intentional on his part. It was too early to say, but Miriam suspected that traces of drugs would be found in his system.
An overdose? Could he have intentionally taken his own life? No, that didn’t sound right. Then again, how well did Naomi even know Nick anymore? For that matter, how well had she ever known him? Naomi supposed it was easy enough for an inmate to have the means to obtain drugs. And, let’s face it, prison life could be grueling.
No, no. Something didn’t feel right about this. Nick’s sentence was only to last just a few more weeks, why would he purposely harm himself? As Naomi tried to make sense of the news, she paced the floor. Zelda, her loyal feline companion, weaved in and out of her legs as Naomi stopped and grabbed her coffee mug from the table.
Sharp rapping on the door startled Naomi, causing her to spill her coffee on her blouse. “Shoot!”
Voicing her own displeasure at nearly being stepped on, Zelda screeched as she tore into the living room. Naomi snatched a napkin, wiping at her top as she made her way to the door.
“Are you ready?” Bryce raised an eyebrow as Naomi stepped to the side to allow him through the front door. He leaned over and placed a quick kiss on her forehead.
“Ready?”
“Ah, yes. Remember? We were going to grab a bite and then head over to the trail for a walk?”
Yes. That’s right. She and Bryce had plans this morning. With everything going on, she had clearly forgotten.
“I . . . I’m so sorry. Give me a minute to change my shirt. Sit, I’ll be right back.” She scurried up the stairs to her bedroom to change. This could be a good thing, the time alone with Bryce. His young daughter, Holly, was in school, and she could have Bryce’s full attention.
Dressed in a clean shirt, Naomi sprinted down the stairs and grabbed her sneakers. She attempted her best smile as she tied the laces. “Almost ready,” Naomi managed.
“What’s with you? Why are you out of breath?” Bryce cocked his head as he studied Naomi.
“Just excited to spend the morning with you,” she offered a bit too cheerily, glancing up at him as she felt nagging guilt rise in her throat. He wouldn’t be happy about the news regarding Nick, and that was putting it mildly. He simply couldn’t even begin to understand. He would tell her to leave it alone, not to get caught up in somebody else’s problems.
Naomi swallowed hard and gripped Bryce’s warm hand as they made their way to his truck. Once inside, Naomi glanced at her fiancĂ© and then gazed down at her lap.
“Bryce?” she whispered.
Concern etched his handsome face. “What is it? What’s wrong?” He reached for her hands.
“We need to talk.”

Excerpt From the Book

Her face haunted me. The adorable dimple pitted in her cheek caught my eye first. Sexy full lips that folded into a gorgeous smile just about took my breath away. I did my best not to continuously stare at her, managing to throw just a few glances here and there hoping she got the message. But she didn't take the bait. Instead, she gave me a 'too good for you' glance while she plowed down a server on her way to the bathroom, probably to restock the toilet paper in her bra.
The Texas Tease, I called it. Lots of girls at UT had it—this one in particular—in spades. Shorter than my normal tastes, her alluring doe-eyes caught me off guard. The memory of her petite frame sashaying as she worked those sexy, black pumps played on a loop in my head. Along with the way her long, brown hair bounced with every step like a damn shampoo commercial.
She drove me insane, and I didn't even know her name. At least Mick confirmed she was a student at UT, apparently in one of his Economics classes.
She intrigued me, sitting in a sports bar drinking beer while her prissy friend sipped wine. I even caught her glancing at the Longhorn game on the big screen. A cute girl who likes beer and football? Every guy's dream. If only she weren't a snob. But, I'd put her in her place. And I had the perfect plan.
The ring of my Skype alert disrupted my plotting. Incoming message from Kanti, my best friend.
Kanti: Hey …
Me: What's up, brat?
Kanti: You busy?
Me: Never too busy for you.
Kanti: Stop with the sugar, you're giving me diabetes.
Me: LOL Better get used to it.
Kanti: Ugh. Don't remind me. Quick, what do you want for your birthday? You got the new Mortal Kombat release already?
Me: Yeah, of course I do. But you don't have to get me anything. You know that.
Kanti: I can't NOT get you anything.
Me: Tell me you talked to your parents and the wedding's called off. That would be an awesome present.
Kanti: Seriously? You know that isn't even in the realm of possibilities. So shut it.
Me: I can dream, can't I?
Kanti: Yeah, and I know what you do in those dreams. Not even going there.
Me: You're such a bitch. Why do I love you?
Kanti: Because we're best friends.
Me: Well, there's that.
Mick yelled through the door. “Jai, you comin' down or what?”
“In a minute,” I replied.
Me: I gotta go. Kegger tonight and we're hosting.
Kanti: Email me and let me know what to get you.
Me: Fine.
Kanti: LOL Kiss Kiss
Me: Whatever. LOL TTYL
I closed the lid on my laptop as Mick flung the door open.
“People are starting to arrive. You're on keg duty first.”
I tossed him a nod. “Yeah, I know. I'm coming. Just finishing up some notes on my Sociology project.”
“I thought you dropped that class?” He folded his arms, leaning against the door-frame.
“I was going to until Professor Wilkinson agreed to let me take it online, since it's the same time as my cinematography course.” I pulled out a notepad. “What'd you say that chick's name was again? The one we saw at the bar today.”
“Catherine Marek. But I think she goes by Cat.” Mick shrugged. “Why? I thought you said she was a snob, and you weren't gonna pursue her?”
“Oh, I'm not. I got my sights set on another girl I've been talking to for a little while. But I think that Cat chick will make for a perfect target on my sociology paper.” I wrote down her name and underlined it five times. “I'm calling it, Friend Zoned.”
Mick laughed. “Oh, this ought to be good. What're you gonna do?”
“It's what I'm not gonna do that's going be the best part. I'm going to act like I'm interested, then when she takes the bait, I'll friend zone her. I'm going to prove that a guy can be sexually attracted to a girl who's interested in him and still remain only friends. I'll be the best 'friend' she's ever gonna have.”

About Wren Michaels

Author Pic
Wren hails from the frozen tundra of Wisconsin where beer and cheese are their own food groups. But a cowboy swept her off her feet and carried her below the Mason-Dixon line to Texas, where she promptly lost all tolerance for cold and snow. Fueled by coffee, dreams, and men in kilts, Wren promises to bring you laughter, sexy fun time, and action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The easiest way to her heart is anything to do with the Green Bay Packers, Doctor Who, or Joss Whedon.
