Excerpt Two:
I rode him as hard as I could straight across the clearing and headed dead-on for the pond in the center of it.

Falstaff’s heavy breath smoked the air. His body beneath me was soaked in sweat. The white of his wild eyes shone in the night. He carried me straight toward the water.

“Now!” I yelled in pure reaction, shifted my weight, and leaned.

Falstaff’s direction changed with such a jolt it wasn’t hard for me to do what I had to do.

The momentum launched me off his back. I was an unguided missile. My arms and legs flailed everywhere.

I slammed against the dark water, but it may as well have been a concrete slab. The wind blew from my lungs. Every inch of me cried out in pain.

The frigid pond waters closed over my head. I sank like a stone.

I headed for the slimy bottom. No. Up. Go up. I fought for the surface, pushed, kicked, and clawed. But there was no strength in my arms or my legs. No breath in my body. My tortured lungs were in agony. My brain was fuzzy. My body numb. I couldn’t see.

Sweet Mary, Mother of God.

I was drowning.

Q & A with Sally J. Smith & Jean Steffens

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

Our protagonist is a man, and the book is in first person. Not easy for two moms.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

Digby Sloan was a fun character to write as was his sidekick, Sharkfella. Fun living with those two for the months it took to write the book.

What do your plans for future projects include?

Completing book 3 in our Mystic Isle Series, Mystic Mischief, which will be out this fall is our current project. Digby #2 is in outlining stage. And we're thinking about a mystery series set in the 1950s.

Do you ever get writer’s Block?

No. Not really. Because there're two of us, block doesn't happen. If one's blocked, the other usually pushes us through the issue.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

When start plotting a book, we use pencil and paper to brainstorm an idea until we get one we like. We go from there.

Have you ever had one character you wanted to go one way with but after the book was done the character was totally different?

No. We control our character. They do as we tell them.

“I guess that’s the thing about high school reunions, though. They make you snap a little.”

In the ten years since high school graduation, Maylee’s career, living arrangements, family, and especially her love life are at a standstill. When her twin brother, Mitch, falls for her high school enemy at their ten-year reunion, Maylee’s life is catapulted into chaos.

Maylee’s hatred for the blonde-haired Josephine isn’t the only thing she discovers at her reunion. Benson Drake, the introvert from high school, has matured into a sexy intellect. Now a writer and bartender, Benson’s grown into a man with a perfect balance of quirky wit and sex appeal. After a wardrobe malfunction, a spy mission gone wrong, and a dangerous cup of coffee, Maylee and Benson explore something they never even thought about during senior year. Along the way, they find out that reconnecting with the past can change you… or maybe just help you find your true self.

I guess that’s the thing about high school reunions, though. They make you snap a little. At least I can admit to it. This has to be the first step to admitting psychosis, right?

Mitch thinks I’ve taken it too far. Shauni, of course, thinks I’m doing the right thing.

“Show those snotty jerks just what you’ve become,” she told me yesterday. “Especially the blonde. Show her you’ve won.”

I’d smiled, munching on my lunch of celery and carrot sticks in my attempt to shed a few more ounces of water weight. Nevertheless, the whole time I was asking myself a very hard question: Have I really won? If I’m going to so much trouble to fool my classmates into thinking I’ve done so well for myself, aren’t there deeper problems than booblessness and a flabby waistline?

Maybe the problem isn’t my body type, my hair, or any of it. Maybe it’s because at twenty-eight, I thought life would be a little different, a little bit more… grown-up.

Looking in the mirror, however, I know I can’t pretend to be all introspective and mature about it. Even though I know it’s ridiculous, there’s a part of me deep down that does want to show her I’ve done okay for myself, no matter what. I want the girl who tortured me in high school, who convinced me I was a mousey nerd, to realize I blossomed.

Even if it is a bit of a lie. Or a lot of a lie.

“Let’s go,” Mitch yells from the living room. I sigh.

No more introspection. It’s go time.

It’s time to face my past.

A high school English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay's the English teacher cliché; she love cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.

She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.

Lindsay's goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she's done her job.

Lindsay's hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

book blurb

It was supposed to be a lot of things...but not this.

After surviving the long and excruciating recruitment process, I thought I would end up working for Madonna or the CIA at the very least.

Boy, was I wrong.

Even in my wildest dreams I couldn't have imagined what I was in for. What my heart was in for.

I couldn't have possibly fathomed the lifestyle, the responsibility, how much it would take out of me, the inner battles, and mostly, the emotional whirlwind.

I could never have imagined, prepared myself for, or anticipated…

Him.

It was supposed to be a job. Just a temporary job. Just a few months. Just a short stop before the journey I was about to take to follow my dream.

It was supposed to be a lot of things...but not this.

Little did I know it would be the one event that would shape me, would change me, would bring on such a shift in the balance of my world.

Would bring...
Him.
Would bring…

Them.
Both.
Into my life.

Time change — Spring Ahead!

Daylight Savings Time is the best thing ever. Yes, I’m crazy. There’s something about it staying light past six at night that makes me happy. In the fall, when the time drops back, I go into a funk. A darkness funk. I don’t like to go out after 4:30. I put my PJ’s on to cook dinner. I put on weight. Boo. But when the time changes again (this year it’s March 12!), I’m all revved up. I’m ready to work in the yard again, I’ll work out in the evenings, I think going for a walk is actually fun. I spring back in action (yes, pun intended). Who else has the winter doldrums? Just a few more days and things will be brighter… at least until 6:30!

About the Author:
Who doesn't love the romance of the old West? USA Today Bestselling author Vanessa Vale takes the sensual appeal of rugged cowboys a step further with her bestselling books set in the Montana Territory. They are much more than just sexy historical westerns. They're deliciously naughty reads that sometimes push the boundaries of fantasy. It's pure escapism with quite a few very hot, very alpha cowboys. When she's not writing, Vanessa savors the insanity of raising two boys, is figuring out how many meals she can make with a pressure cooker, and teaches a pretty mean karate class. She considers herself to be remarkably normal, exceedingly introverted and fairly vanilla, which does not explain her steamy stories and her fascination with cowboys, preferably more than one at a time. She lives in the Wild Wild West where there's an endless source of 'research' material.
