Excerpt:

We’re both unique beings. One of a kind, that monster called us. I learned… in prison, our families brought us together because they thought we’d understand each other. They hoped we’d become friends then lovers, then, we’d get married.” Serin sighed. His breath went straight to Jade’s head. “I was on my way home one day. They took me. They made me watch while my only friend grew up and forget about me. I watched while Mom lost the will to do anything. She died alone and heartbroken. I saw those humans kill your parents. I was forced to watch the disrespect their bodies received.”

Jade felt his voice everywhere.

Serin touched his lips across her jaw. He rested his forehead against hers. How did he know how to kiss like that?

I missed you, Jade.”

He kissed her lips.

She needed to think. He needed to let her go. She had to process this. Serin wouldn’t let her go. She didn’t want him to release her. She never felt this warm, even with Mom and Dad.
He pulled away. The sudden coldest wasn’t welcome.

Q & A with Auden Johnson

What was the hardest part of writing this book? Visible Through Darkness, Book 1 of The Jura series, started as a 5,000 word standalone story. I felt that was too short to sell so I needed to make it longer. The original story ended on a “new beginning” kind of note so there was room to expand. I kept getting stuck whenever I tried writing. The ideas weren’t coming. I worked in short bursts, taking long breaks. Eventually, I got enough inspiration to get in a couple of good writing sessions and finish this story. What did you enjoy most about writing this book? Writing Jade and Serin’s interactions. Both of them are sweet, feisty and damaged. Having spent so much time alone, Serin is bad at interacting with people. He can come off as commanding. Jade’s like, “He was imprisoned for twenty years. Let’s pick our battles.” It doesn’t always work since Serin will say or do something that’ll hit one of Jade’s bad memories. They’re starving for attention so they cuddle and kiss often even though they haven’t establish a relationship. They like each other as friends but they don’t think past that. Jade and Serin are going a bit out of order but this is all new to them. What do your plans for future projects include? At this point, I don’t see The Jura series ending any time soon. I’m already working on Book 4 in my head. Also, I’ll be releasing a book called The Unburned Island next month. It’s a paranormal/dark fantasy story with some romance in it. Magical characters are investigating a haunted island. This is the first book in a series I think will keep going for a while. Do you ever get writer’s Block? Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block? I never call it writer’s block because it sounds like this mountain I can’t climb. I call it getting stuck. Yeah, I’ve gotten stuck a few times. I usually do something unrelated to my story like go for a walk or I’ll go on Pinterest and look up fantasy/horror images to see if something rouses my muse. Have you ever had one character you wanted to go one way with but after the book was done the character was totally different? At first, Jade was supposed to be an ordinary woman saving a strange magical man who’s been imprisoned for several years. As the story progressed, Jade discovered she had powers as well. I never intended that to happen. I had to go back to the beginning of the story and insert clues so it wouldn’t feel like this reveal came out of nowhere.
