Excerpt Reveal w/Giveaway: Wait by A.L. Jackson

  Wait COMING AUGUST 23       ALJackson-WaitBookCover5x8_BW_HIGH
From NYT & USA Today bestselling author comes a new Bleeding Stars stand-alone novel… She is his strength and he is her weakness. And this time he won’t let her go.   Edie Evans is gorgeous. Sexy. Kind. She’s also the definition of off-limits. But that didn't stop me from sneaking into her room to comfort her at night. But guys like me? We destroy everything, so it should have been no surprise when I destroyed us, too. The night I sent her running, I thought I’d never see her again. Until I saw her standing like a vision in the crowd.   Austin Stone is dangerous. Alluring. Tempting. He broke my heart and I refused to give him the chance to do it again. It’s been years since I’ve seen him, and now I can’t do anything but stare at the gorgeous, tattooed man playing onstage. I should run. I know I should. But like a fool, I run straight back to him. Our desire is overpowering. Our need unrelenting. She is my hope. He is my weakness. We should have known a passion this intense would burn us right into the ground. ADD TO GOODREADS

“Edie…please…just…wait.” I gripped the railing as if it might propel me forward. Instead, my footsteps faltered and slowed. I stood facing away, my back heaving as his consuming presence swarmed over me from behind. “Please.” This time it was a whisper. A plea. Sincere. Slowly I turned. Drawn. He’d always been my weakness. Austin stood at the end of the walkway, just outside the reach of the lights, his body obscured in shadows. Even larger than I’d imagined when I’d first seen him up on stage. So foreign. So familiar. My heart ached. Because I was looking at the boy who’d been my best friend. The one person who I’d thought would completely understand. One who wouldn’t judge or make it hurt more than it already did. He’d been my safety. My haven. Until he’d dragged me right back into hell. “Why are you here?” My words cracked. “H-h-how…how did you find me?” I saw the shake of his head, and he took a single step forward, out of the shadows and into the glow of the single lamp attached high on the exterior wall that lit the way. It hit him like a spotlight. The boy was so beautiful. It was a threatening kind of beauty, a whorl of mystery and pain, sharp lines and corded muscle. It almost dropped me to my knees. He fisted his hands at his sides. The question was strained, hard as it pressed from his mouth. “You believe in fate, Edie?” Old grief I’d bottled for so long burst. It came out as some kind of maniacal cry. Incredulous. Oozing disbelief. “After everything that happened…that’s what you’re going to ask me?” “Edie…I—” “Do you have any idea how badly you hurt me?” I cut him off, my own hands fisting as I took a single step forward. “The damage you caused? Careless words, Austin. So fucking careless, thrown out there without a single thought to the repercussions, without any consideration of how they would affect me. How they would change my life. You promised.” My brow twisted with the accusation. “And now you have the nerve to stand there and ask me if I believe in fate?” I swallowed hard, shook my head. “You can go to straight to hell, Austin Stone.” He laughed, but there was zero humor behind it. “Come on, Edie. You can do better than that, can’t you? Considering you know hell is where I’ve been all along, and you and I both know I deserve so much worse. And yeah…those words were reckless, but you know they weren’t heedless. You couldn’t expect me to just stand there. Not with him. Not with what he was saying. Implying. I couldn’t.” The last cracked on the emphasis. I felt as if every cell in my body was being crushed. Squeezed so tight there was no chance but for everything to implode. “And because you lost it, I lost it all. You. My home. My future.” His big hands fisted. “I know. I…I fucked it up, Edie. Warned you, I always fuck it up.” But what he failed to say was he’d promised he wouldn’t fuck it up with me. I couldn’t tell if I was relieved or terrified when Jed suddenly rounded the corner. His sister, Blaire, was hot on his heels. “Edie,” Jed gushed out in relief when he saw me. He came to a stop a few steps behind Austin. As if he’d just stepped into the bristling intensity and it tripped up his feet. The stand-off. The war. Austin standing there? I knew that’s exactly what this was going to be. “What the hell is going on here?” Jed demanded. His voice twisted into a threat. He glared at the back of Austin’s head, worried eyes flicking to me, hardening when they snapped back to Austin. Blaire tugged at his arm. “Jed…I told you to give her a minute. Sometimes you need to let people sort out their own issues.” Jed just grunted and shrugged off her arm. Refusing to budge. Austin swung his head to look behind him. When he did, his face shifted to the side, all those hard, beautiful lines exposed in profile, his expression winding into a bitter sneer. “Nah, man. All’s good here. Just telling an old friend hi. Isn’t that right, Edie?” Aggression curled between them. Alive and raging. Jed was a burly, beefy, hulk of a man, a full beard covering most of his face, his brown hair cut short at the sides and longer on top. Had I ever imagined him and Austin going toe to toe, I would have put all my money on Jed. Now I wasn’t so sure. Jed lifted his chin, as if for the moment he was standing down, turning to me as his tone softened. “You okay, Edie?” I nodded. “Yeah, I’m okay.” Lie. Lie. Lie. I was shaken to my core. “I just want to go home.” It left me on a desperate breath. Jed pushed around Austin and stalked my way. “All right, let’s get you out of here.” As she passed by Austin, Blaire cast a searching glance in his direction, before her attention flickered over to me, a ton of worried questions moving across her expression. Questions I didn’t know if I had the strength to answer. With an arm wound around my shoulder, Jed spun me, breaking the spell Austin had me under, and tucked me into his side. Protecting and shielding. He began to lead me away, down the planks and toward his car waiting in the parking lot out front. With each step we took, I could feel the heat of Austin’s stare. That burning intensity I wasn’t sure I could ever escape. The hurt and hatred. It was a hatred I couldn’t tell who it was directed at. If it was aimed at him or me or the rest of the world that had threatened to choke the life out of us. The world we were supposed to take on together. Just as we started to round the corner, I paused because I just couldn’t stop myself, turned to look back at the man who stood there staring back at me. Emotion gripped his expression just as tight as the clench of his fists. Hard and tortured. As if I was the one inflicting the pain. I choked down the sorrow that rose like a cyclone, spinning and spinning, whipping up the old affection that longed for that soft, understanding boy to take me in his arms and sing in my ear. Dangerous. I searched inside myself for the shelter that secured my heart. The flimsy cover I wore that just barely kept me together. I forced myself to speak the words I knew would drive him away, as much of a lie as they were. “And for the record…no, Austin, I definitely don’t believe in fate.”     Wait_24         a Rafflecopter giveaway

BLURB:

After a sudden job lay off, Maya holes up in her apartment, drinking wine and eating ice cream until the day she’s slated to leave for Greece. Even though she’s lost enthusiasm for this Greek island swimming vacation, she’s paid for the trip so she boards the plane.

She figures her life can’t possibly get any worse. She’s unemployed and spent most of her savings hiring a lawyer to collect commissions her corrupt boss refused to pay. She stumbles down to the Lefkada Island dock the first morning jetlagged and grumpy. When she spots a Greek man with a drool-worthy body, her plan is to look casual. Instead, she trips and plunges straight into the water. It wouldn’t be so bad if she never had to see him again. But Eros, a former Hellenic Navy SEAL, is one of her swimming tour companions. He boards the boat, pokes fun at her American mannerisms and asks way too many irritating questions. And he’s so damn hot, he makes her feel confused and distracted all the time. To make matters worse, he’s assigned to be one of her swimming partners.

Maybe Maya could have ignored the simmering attraction between them if it weren’t for the earthquake, the tidal wave and being stranded alone with him on Kalamos Island.

Excerpt:

“Don’t put your foot there. Step inside the boat,” Libby urges. With her free hand, she adjusts her sunglasses, which have bright red rims.

“Oh, okay.” My legs feel too far apart to be even close to stable as I launch my lead foot onto the flat surface of the boat bottom. It’s rocking in the gentle waves. Whoa. I wave my arms to regain my balance. I need to re-establish some semblance of equilibrium before I pick up the second foot from solid ground.

That’s when my gaze lands on a drool-worthy man walking nonchalantly down the stairs. I first notice he’s not wearing a shirt. It’s very hard not to notice that every perfectly defined muscle on his chest is tanned to a deep bronze that exaggerates every cut and contour. The sprinkle of dark hair on his chest only makes him look more masculine. Damn, he’s hot. I’m so spellbound by the sight my eyeballs could pop out and splash down in the water in front of me. My tongue and the roof of my mouth feel as dry as the Sahara Desert. My heart races. My eyes water and sting because I can’t blink. If I do, I might miss a second of this spectacular view.

Where the hell did the to-die-for man come from? He wasn’t at the meeting the previous night. Is he part of our group or here to board a different boat? I silently hope he’s with us. Then I reprimand myself for that thought, telling myself now is about the worst time for me to get distracted by some random hot man.

He has to be Greek. His hair is a tangled mass of dark curls and falls well below his shoulders. Dark thick wing-shaped brows draw attention to his large, expressive eyes. Holy shit. My gaze takes a delicious detour back to his body, where it’s already spent too much time lingering. My eyes soak up the view of the muscular planes of his chest and follow the line of dark hair over his six-pack abs until it disappears into his swim trunks. This is the kind of man you dream about and then wake up mad and pounding your pillow over it because you want to be back asleep and not awaking anytime soon.

Libby tugs on my arm, urging me onward. “You’d think you never bloody seen a man before. Would you stop gaping and get your backside on this boat?”

“Oh, sure.” I lift my lagging foot from the dock and raise it over the rim of the inflatable boat. My gaze refuses to unglue itself from Hot Man’s Chest. My foot catches on a rope along the top of the rim. The boat and my body lurches and my hand slips from Libby’s grasp. I look below me and see that the boat has pulled more than two feet away from the dock on the taut rope. I’m in imminent danger of a splashdown.

My arms flap like wings through the empty air and my body tips and sways and I think how embarrassing this situation is just before I make a dramatic splash into the bay.

A defense attorney’s worst nightmare…

“If I pay with my life, you will pay with yours.”

Defense Attorney Bryan Lexan may have just taken on the case which will cost him his life. When his client, a Russian mafia boss, is convicted of first-degree murder, he vows to make Bryan pay.

Meanwhile, Jessica Pratt has always prided herself on being a modern woman–you know, the kind who doesn’t need a man to make her feel complete. So when she finds herself torn between two, she realizes that not all decisions are based on facts. If they were, her boyfriend, Bryan, would be the logical choice. He has the family name, wealth, and a stake in a successful law firm. Only thing is, when she meets Mason Freeman, the chemistry between them is irrefutable and he won’t take no for an answer.

With both of them caught up in a struggle for survival, and a powerful enemy on their heels, they’ll need to decide where their loyalties lie.

Please note: This book is a romantic suspense. Madison Knight of the best-selling police procedural series has more of a secondary role in this book. This story provides insight into Madison’s background and the series that was inspired by her.

 Prologue

HE HATED BEING RIGHT SOMETIMES. Too bad money blinded him from following his gut instinct. He hated being so self-assured that he thought he could meet the infamous Russian mafia boss and have the option of walking away.

“He’s in here.” The officer swung the door open and stepped to the side.

Possibly it was his heightening sense of paranoia getting the best of him, but he could swear the cop didn’t even want to be in the same room with the man.

The Russian was cuffed to the table but leaned back in his chair, chest wide, as far as the chain would allow. He cupped one hand over the back of the other.

For being forty-five, he looked older than his years. His shoulder-length brown hair clung to his head as if slicked with grease. His eyes were sunken and his cheeks concave, giving prominence to his jaw bone, but it wasn’t his physical attributes that changed perception—it was the raw energy in the room.

Dimitre Petrov snapped his fingers, and Bryan was torn from his thoughts.

“Lexan, da? You’ll be my lawyer.”

Dimitre kept his eyes on him, and when he didn’t respond right away, he made a point of directing Bryan’s attention to the clock on the wall.

Bryan supposed time held a different value when facing the possibility of life in prison.

Q & A with Faye Avalon author of Beast Untamed

What is for you the perfect book hero?
Have to admit I love an alpha, but someone who is honest, confident, ambitious, has a sense of humor, and a bucket-load of integrity. It doesn’t hurt that he’s also tall, dark, sexy as sin, and would do absolutely anything to protect his heroine.

When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?
The beginning scene is always there, and maybe ideas for additional scenes based on their conflicts, but I basically just let the characters tell their story. I’ve tried plotting out the whole book but for me that takes away some of the magic.

When and why did you begin writing?
It’s a bit of a cliché but I’ve always been a writer. A perennial learner, I’ve taken loads of courses in many subjects over the years and have written goodness knows how many essays and dissertations. But it wasn’t until I achieved my Masters Degree that I decided to move into writing fiction. I loved it from the start, and romance was a no-brainer because that’s really all I tend to read, that and anything to do with the Law of Attraction.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I got published, although I think looking back that was wrong. If you write, you’re a writer—published or not.

List three books you have recently read and would recommend.
Nora Roberts, Star of Fortune
Maggie Shayne, The Littlest Cowboy
Pamela Hartshorne, The Memory of Midnight

Tell us something that people would be surprised you know how to do.
I can still do a handstand, and not many people know that!

Will you write more about these characters?
Absolutely. I’ve fallen in love with my Beasts of Bodmin Moor

Beast Untamed: Beasts of Bodmin Moor, Book 3 by Faye Avalon

Date of Publication: June 7, 2016

Blurb

To guard his woman, he must claim his mate.
Beasts of Bodmin Moor, Book 3
Ex-special forces operative Nathan Quinn enjoys women, but he just doesn't trust them. Thanks to a mother who abandoned him, he prefers no-strings relationships, and has no intention of ever marrying or mating with a fellow shifter.
He focuses his energy on building his security business until a human woman catches his eye-and firmly rejects his charm. Which only challenges him to work harder to break down her barriers.
Born of ambitious, emotionally cold parents, Erin Howard's craving for attention led her down a slippery slope to an abusive relationship. Now on the run from her ex, she plans to lay low and stay away from possessive, dominating males. But who says she can't enjoy a little hot sex without a shred of commitment?
Soon their attraction explodes into something so fierce, that Nathan feels the primal need to mark Erin as his. But his fallback plan-distance himself-creates the space for Erin's past to drive the final, possibly fatal, wedge between them.
Warning: Contains a sexy panther shifter with an attitude problem, a human female intent on playing things safe, and an anxious dog learning to co-exist with the local cats.
