Q & A with Eve Devon author of Heart of Steel

Q & A with Eve Devon author of Heart of Steel

How did you come up with the idea for this story?
It’s a bit of a strange one for a gal who loves all things romance, but I guess this is where I also admit that I’m a sucker for anything to do with great engineering and amazing design. I’ve always wanted to introduce steampunk elements into my writing and somehow feature The Great Exhibition of 1851, with all that fabulous design and innovation.

There was just one problem…I didn’t have experience writing historical!

So I asked if there were any other authors out there who wanted to write with me about a company who created secure locking devices to display a diamond like the Koh-I-Noor for The Great Exhibition. The result was getting to create a continuity of standalones with two fabulous authors. I loved the idea of not limiting ourselves – of getting to marry historical suspense with contemporary suspense, so one book is set in 1851 and the next two books in present-day.

The three of us wanted to write heart-pounding suspense that spanned time, so we created Steel Hawk - a company that rode the highs and lows of industry and adapted over the years to thrive in present-day too. A company of alpha-honorable heroes and spirited and strong heroines, set against a backdrop of high-tech security, feuding royals and missing diamonds.

What are your current projects?
I’m very blessed to be able to write in two different genres – romantic suspense and romcom. My current project is a romcom set in a quintessential English village about an eccentric Clock House owner who challenges a pair of newcomers to compete against each other to raise funds for a village fete. The person who raises the most money earns the right to buy The Clock House and turn it into a business. It’s a fete of the village, versus the fate of their hearts romcom that will be published by HarperCollins early next year.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I love writing about “feeling the fear and doing it anyway”. I think being courageous in life, believing in yourself and taking that leap of faith, is very important. In Heart of Steel, Honeysuckle Hawk is very aware she hasn’t really ever stuck at anything – she’s also aware that it’s her fear of failure that stops her. Will she have the courage to ‘stick’ when the going gets tough?

Does music play any type of role in your writing?
Alas, I’m one of those people who can’t write with music on. I always have a think about what my character’s music tastes might be…an awful lot of classic rock seems to creep in!! I think I even have Adam Steel wearing a faded Metallica t-shirt in one of his scenes.

What books have influenced your life most?
There are certain classics that will always hold a special place in my heart – I like to have a Dickens on the go around Christmas and submerge myself in atmosphere and colorful characters.

I’ll never forget devouring the first Harlequin my mum gave me and promptly demanding “more”. Nora Roberts made me want to write romance; Agatha Christie made me want to write suspense (so many of her characters’ motivations are actually really dark and twisty!).

Reading Ann Rule as a teenager gave me a thirst for understanding motive and Stephen King still has the ability to make me jump! Plus, his On Writing should be required reading for anyone who wants to write.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
I love Annie Crouch and Veronica Forand.

How can readers discover more about you and your work?
I love a good natter and I love to hear from readers. I have a contact sheet on my website: or you can chat with me on twitter: @EveDevon or on Facebook:

The small town of Eastbrook, Maine seemed like the close-knit community where newlyweds Dean and Elizabeth Montgomery could begin their lives together, and the 1901 Victorian seemed like the house they’d always dreamed of owning. The only condition for purchasing the property was that it was sold in “as-is” condition.

When the couple arrives in Eastbrook, they receive anything but a warm welcome from the local residents. And when they realize that as-is condition meant that the previous owner of the house had left every worldly possession behind, the dream of the small town life starts to take a mysterious turn.

Day after day, Dean and Elizabeth uncover more truths than they could have ever imagined, or ever wanted to know about the secrets that were hidden in the small town of Eastbrook. And as neighbors become growingly hostile with every encounter, this young couple searches furiously to uncover what the residents are trying to hide.

As their journey unfolds, Elizabeth goes missing and Dean must turn to the very neighbors he fears may have known what would happen to her from the moment the couple arrived for help. Because in this town, some secrets are better off hidden.

knock pounded loudly on the door for a second time and Elizabeth involuntarily let out a small shriek. She frantically put her hand over her mouth, but the sound had already escaped and there was little doubt that Mrs. Jacobs had heard.

“Well,” Dean sighed, as he stood up from the crouched position he’d been standing in beside the window. “Now we answer the door because you apparently have Tourette’s.

As Elizabeth slowly stood up beside him, a third round of loud pounding ensued. Elizabeth jumped at the sudden noise and hit her head against Dean’s lower lip. His head jolted back from the force and he winced.

“Oh my God,” She leapt forward toward him. “Are you ok?”

Dean reached his hand and clenched his jaw, pulling it from left to right. He pointed toward the door. “Great, first I get physically abused, now I’m going to get emotionally abused. And I still have no underwear.”

He finally came to the door and put his hand on the door knob. He looked back at Elizabeth, “Just for the record, you are the worst covert ops partner ever.” With a specific intent in mind, he quickly turned the door knob and ripped open the door as fast as he could. A startled Mrs. Jacobs stumbled backwards.

“You almost scared me to death.” She asserted, quickly brushing her dress to remove the imaginary wrinkles that had not formed from her near encounter.

He stepped outside and grabbed Elizabeth by the wrist to pull her out of the house with him. “Well follow through has always been my problem. Look, we were just headed out the door and into town so we’re going to have to finish this later.” He reached for the door knob and slammed the door behind him.

But Mrs. Jacobs did not move. Other than the slight falter when he opened the door, she held her stance and stared at the closed door. Dean had a feeling it was not the first or the last time she had ever had a door closed in her face. With their backs to the old woman, the couple took several steps toward the edge of the porch.

“You live next door, right? We’ll stop by. Oh the fun we’ll have.” Still holding on to Elizabeth’s wrist, he pulled her past Mrs. Jacob’s and down the steps.

“Where are we going?” Elizabeth whispered.

Mrs. Jacobs turned to face them. Her hands clasped in a folded position in front of her.

“We’re going to see if we can find out what happened in that room, what happened in that house. Someone here knows. Everyone in this town can’t be as bad as Mrs. HaWiggins back there.” He whispered back.

Synopsis: When Officer Rick Boyd answers a call about a peeping Tom, he doesn’t expect to find a gorgeous woman holding the binoculars. But Gina Silvano’s no peeping Tom, and she can catch her cupcake truck’s kinky vandals herself, thank you very much. No sexy cops required.
No matter how hot their stakeouts, by-the-book Officer Boyd can’t see a future with a dangerous, rule-breaking wild-child who despises the law. He’s never felt more alive, though, and expunging her from his heart might be impossible. But loving each other might cost them more than they are able to give.

Rick moved closer to the rustling bag while Gina stood stock-still, her eyes wide and anxious.
“What is it?” she whispered.
“I think a mouse has decided to help himself to the rest of our cupcakes.”
“What?” she shrieked.
Before he could say another word, she’d jumped up on her chair. Not designed for trampoline practice, the thin plastic promptly shredded. Rick reached out to catch her as one leg went through the plastic and the rest of her went sideways. He caught her before she hit the ground. But apparently their movements landed them a little too close to the occupied bag for her comfort because she took one look down, gasped, and climbed him like a tree.
“What are you doing?” he asked, both laughing and grunting as she twisted around him.
“Get rid of it!”
“What, the bag?” He grabbed her around the waist to keep her from falling ass-first onto the hard roof.
“No! The damn mouse, or rat, or whatever the hell it is!”
The bag rustled again, and she squeezed her legs around his waist and gripped his neck so tight she was dangerously close to strangling him.
“I can’t do anything if you don’t loosen your grip.”
She tore her gaze from the bag o’ death at their feet and looked at him. “Oh. Sorry,” she said, letting up a little.
He took a nice deep breath. “Thank you.”
His eyes met hers, and she seemed to realize the position she’d gotten them into. Her legs and arms wrapped about him. His hands beneath her butt and thighs, holding her up. Their faces only inches apart. All their delicate bits pressed as close as they could get with their clothing still on.
Her cheeks flashed fifty shades of red in the faint light coming from the streetlight below.
“Sorry,” she murmured again. “You, um, can put me down now.”
He tightened his hold on her. “You sure?” he asked, not wanting to let her go. He liked the way she felt molded to his body. The vanilla scent of her hung in the air between them, whetting his appetite for something a little sweeter than the cupcakes in the rat bag. All he had to do was close the distance between them…
Her breathing sped up, her lips parting with a little sigh. Her gaze zeroed in on his lips and there was no hiding from her how he felt about her wrapped around him. For a split second, her legs tightened their hold on his waist, pressing even closer. Her eyes fluttered closed. But then she shook her head and loosened her grip.
“Yeah, I’m sure,” she said, pushing away from him. “But…put me on the chair until you get rid of that thing.”
He chuckled and reluctantly deposited her on top of the chair he’d been sitting in. Then he bent and swiftly scooped up the bag, rolling the top down so whatever was inside couldn’t get out.

Kira Archer Kira Archer resides in Pennsylvania with her husband, two kiddos, and far too many animals in the house. She tends to laugh at inappropriate moments, break all the rules she gives her kids (but only when they aren’t looking), and would rather be reading a book than doing almost anything else.
