TO WIN A SCOUNDREL'S HEART
The Lords of Whitehall #2
Kristen McLean
Releasing July 19th, 2016
Young Ink Press

When her husband’s death is ruled a suicide, Lady Dumonte suspects foul play. However, finding the truth seems impossible after every investigator in Paris turns up empty-handed. Now she is forced to seek help from Lord Pembridge, a feckless libertine.

Although the pain of loss is a constant reminder of why she must hide her heart, this carefree scoundrel threatens to break past her defenses. He could uncover the truth regarding her husband’s death, but is learning the truth worth risking her heart?

Lord Pembridge has wealth, angelic good looks, and a sunny disposition. None would guess the dark secret blackening his past or the grudge controlling his future. It was the reason he could never have a family of his own, a fate he had accepted until he was forced to play detective for the one woman who could tempt him.

“You, m’dear girl,” he murmured, “are old enough to know better than to tempt a scoundrel.”
“I know what I am doing,” she spouted back indignantly. “I am not a child.”
“No,” he agreed easily. “You are certainly not a child.”
“Then I would expect you not to treat me like one.” Her eyes flashed, giving him a teasing glimpse of passion.
Lady Dumonte possessed passion?
Another surprise.
“Of course not.” He frowned in mock seriousness. “How should I treat you? As a lady or a mistress?”
“As a woman,” she ground out. “I am a woman!” Her lips pursed together as she glared up at him.
He smiled broadly; he couldn’t help himself.
“Ah, yes,” he agreed, looking her over as though he had only just noticed. “I believe you are.”
She took in a deep breath, pushing her breasts against the tight fabric of her bodice.
His cock jumped to attention.
“I was wrong about not liking you. I hate you!”
“And yet,” he mused with a knit brow, “you throw yourself at me like all the others. You are either in denial of your overwhelming attraction to me or a glutton for punishment. For my own complacency, I choose the former.”
Céleste shook her head slowly, her eyes narrowed and seething with anger.
“Regardless,” he continued frankly at his own peril, “you had better run along, or you may find your offer accepted, and we both know you never expected that. Your bluff has been called, Lady Dumonte. Go on home like a good girl.”
“I never bluff.”
“Never say never, m’dear,” he murmured with a purposefully wicked smile.

Q & A with Kristen McLean

What books/authors have influenced your writing?
Kathryn Smith, Loretta Chase, and Sophie Jordan are my favorite authors. They inspired me to write, and have certainly influenced the way I weave a story.

Have you ever had one character you wanted to go one way with but after the book was done the character was totally different?I try to have my characters pretty well figured out before I begin writing their story, but every once in a while one will surprise me. I never see it until the book is finished and I read through it.

What’s your next project?
Desperate Dukes will be my next project, and I am very excited about it. I already have two of the books in the series started.
What was your favorite part of the book?
It’s difficult to pick just one. I think my most favorite part was the chase toward the end. That’s the best answer I have without giving anything away.

If you could write in another genre what would it be & why?
I adore historical romance, but if I had to pick another genre to write in I suppose it would be paranormal or fantasy. The possibilities with those genres are endless.

Your favorite book by you or another author.
The Captive Prince series by C.S. Pacat is my favorite. It isn’t in my genre, but holy cow that story blew me away.

Clean shaven, Scruff, beard, or mustache. Ink yay or nay?
Ooh, I like clean-shaven and I like some scruff, but the beard thing is too much for me, and unless the man in question is Clark Gable or Errol Flynn, a mustache by itself is a no-go. Ink doesn’t bother me as long as there isn’t too much of it. Everything in moderation. Except chocolate, wine, and books, of course.

Kristen has always had a love of novels, with a special place in her heart for historical romance. After reading enough of them to fill a rather impressive library, she decided to write her own. Now she has the pleasure of writing at home, tucked away in a forest with her husband, two children and her cat. Her husband is loving, and impressively patient, her two beautiful children strive to embarrass and exhaust her, and her cat hates everyone, but tolerates—well, she tolerates whoever will feed her.

Blog Tour: This Loving Feeling by Miranda Liasson

TLF BT Ban

About This Loving Feeling: Samantha Rushford’s future looks bright: the high school art teacher is getting ready to leave Mirror Lake and move to Boston with her ambitious boyfriend, and she hopes a diamond ring is just around the corner. But her past still has a hold on her—especially the bittersweet memory of her rebellious ex, who kissed her passionately before he left town without a word.   Since then, Lukas Spikonos has parlayed his rebel ways into life as an up-and-coming recording artist. When he shows up for a surprise gig at the high school prom, Sam is more dumbstruck than starstruck—he used the words of a poem she wrote about their breakup to create a number one hit. But Lukas hasn’t returned just to impress students; he’s facing some real-life responsibilities and needs Sam’s help. But she has her own unresolved issues about the life she wants to lead. Will the music—and the pull of true love and family—put their hearts back in harmony? Love comes along when it’s least wanted

Jason Guthrie has no time for entanglements—between helping out his widowed brother and teenage nephew and getting his hometown back on its feet, his days are spoken for. But his nights are another story… And when his lovely new neighbor, Honor Brown, reluctantly accepts his help in remodeling her house, Jason finds himself wishing his handyman skills could knock down the defenses she keeps building around herself.

Martial arts teacher Sullivan Dean knows real danger when he sees it—even when it takes the form of the gorgeous blonde helping her friend move in across the street. After putting his wayward past behind him to focus on teaching control to troubled kids, Sullivan has learned to avoid party girls like Lexie Perkins. But Sullivan can’t seem to keep his hands off the real woman behind that flirty charm—or keep his heart from landing at her feet…

Excerpt:

Hogan the blue-eyed dad, Colt the mature-looking son and Jason…the far-too-hot shirtless hunk. As she committed the names to memory, Honor glanced at each of them, but repeatedly got drawn back to Jason.
The sun highlighted the cut of his cheekbones, the straight line of his nose and across those sleek, hard shoulders. Why didn’t he put on a shirt? She couldn’t quite keep her gaze from his chest, noting he had just the right amount of dark chest hair going from one well-defined pec to the other then bisecting his body downward…
It wouldn’t kill the man to pull up his well-worn jeans, either. Being healthy and female and, okay, more than a little sex starved, she automatically tracked the treasure trail leading down his abdomen to inside those low-slung jeans…
“Hogan and Colt live here, too,” Jason said while silently accepting her scrutiny.
Busted again. She cleared her throat and got her eyes to focus back on his face. “I see.” To Hogan, she asked, “You and your wife are in the neighborhood?”
Pushing away from the truck, Hogan said, “Colt’s mother is gone.”
That left her floundering. Did he mean…dead? Should she give condolences?
Or maybe he meant she’d moved away.
“For now,” Hogan continued, “we live with Jason.”
Oh. With him. In the same house.
All three of them—right next door to her.
Saving her from the awkward silence, Lexie took over. “I’m Lexie Perkins, and the new homeowner here is Honor Brown.” Then to Jason, she added, “You’re going to make her faint if you don’t let up.”
“Lexie!” Horrified, Honor felt so much heat in her face it nearly singed her. She’d gag her friend if she didn’t stop with the outrageous behavior.
Jason cocked a brow but didn’t look away.

Paperback & ebook, 384 pages

Her choice. His consequences.

Nurse Sophie Mattuchi has seen a lot of angry patients in the ER, but no one's ever rattled her like Jack Carter. He has no right to blame her for his friend's death. Sophie did everything she could. Didn't she? Yet his accusations sting, and that sets off all kinds of internal alarms. She's never cared this much about any man's opinion of her. But Jack is different. He stirs up feelings. Strong feelings. Guilt. Anger. Attraction. Curiosity. Sympathy. Sophie's definitely not interested in Jack, but even if she was, he'd never forgive her for the decision she made that night in the hospital. Would he?

Excerpt:

Sophie eased around Jack and found the hair dryer, then turned it on full blast. “Come here,” she ordered.

“My hair’s dry enough,” he said, but he moved closer, anyway. “I could dry yours for you, though.”

Sophie dropped to her knees to hide her blush and started drying his pants’ legs. “If you let the water set, there will be a permanent stain around the edges. As soon as you can on Monday, take the tux to the cleaners and ask them to work on these water stains. Maybe you can save the suit.” She was rambling.

“The jacket is probably toast, but it was worth it.”

Sophie continued drying his pants’ legs, pretending she hadn’t heard what he’d just said. She was thankful she was on the floor because being this close to Jack, in this intimate setting, had turned her bones to jelly.

Jack reached down and gently pulled Sophie to her feet. He took the hair dryer from her and turned it off. Suddenly, the room seemed as quiet as a church at midnight.

“You can’t help it, can you?”

“What?”

“It’s just in you to always help,” he explained. “The broken, the wounded, dogs, anyone in pain. Me included. Do you ever put yourself first?” He didn’t wait for an answer. “If you do, I certainly haven’t seen it.”

He put his palm on her cheek and stroked her temple with his thumb. His eyes roamed her face slowly, as if memorizing it. “You didn’t dry your own hair, which is quite wet. Still beautiful. But wet. You didn’t towel off your dress, which probably needs to go to the cleaners just as much as my tux. Maybe more. My tux is a decade old. And that’s new, isn’t it?”

“Uh-huh,” she murmured with only a tip of her head. She couldn’t take her eyes off his. Something monumental was happening to her and for the first time in her life she didn’t want to stop it, slow it down or change course. She wanted to meet it head on. Fling herself over the waterfall and see if she survived.

Her gaze dropped to his lips. She felt hers trembling. She wasn’t afraid of the thunder like Frenchie, but the storm inside her heart terrified her.

She’d kissed him before.

But now, things were different. She was different. What if Jack wasn’t feeling the spark she felt? What if he chose his own guilt, his prejudices, over her?

And if he did, could she live with that? What would she do? Her grandmother always told her that once she’d tasted paradise, she’d never be satisfied with life on earth. Now Sophie knew exactly what she meant. Jack held the key to heaven for her. She felt it. Knew it in her heart and soul.

She put her hand over his. “Jack, we should go downstairs.”

“We should do a lot of things. But we won’t.”

His kiss was more explosive than the thunder outside. Sophie had felt safety and gentleness the first time their lips had touched, but this...this was powerful and meant to be shattering. He slipped one hand to the nape of her neck while the other clung to the back of her dress, pressing her closer to him.

“The bottom line – and once again, no pun intended – is I think you might have overstayed your welcome in my home, Ezekiel.  Much like the smell of fish, unwanted guests begin to stink after the third day and you’ve been smelling something fierce for a while now,” she informed him primly, clasping her hands in front of her waist as she stared innocently at him.
“Now, Honor,” Zeke chided, amused.  “What would your mother say right now about that most unwelcoming attitude you have?”
“Holy crap.  He brought Momma into it,” Faith whispered violently to Harmony.
“The fool’s clearly lost his mind,” Harmony returned uneasily.
“Moron,” Aunt Orla cackled.  “Harriet, God rest her soul, woulda cut your ding-a-ling off at the root for streakin’ in her kitchen.”
“True though that may be, Auntie, I think my mother would be impressed that I’ve managed to maintain my sanity for this long.  She raised me to be a good hostess, and heaven knows, I’ve tried.  But you, Ezekiel, could make a preacher cuss on Sunday.  You’ve been nothing but a demanding, domineering pain in my derriere since you took my house hostage.  I swear, you shadow me when I so much as wander toward the bathroom.  And when it’s not you, it’s one of your trained monkeys watching me like some kind of science experiment.  I’ve had enough!  I told you last night that I intended to come back to work and find some kind of normalcy again.  You chose to believe I’d cede to your will.  Your error in judgment doesn’t translate into being either my fault or my problem.”
“No, but willfully draining the air from my tires most certainly is,” Zeke roared.  “What if I’d gotten a call out?”
“The SUV Abel loaned me – but you STILL won’t allow me to drive – is parked in the garage.”  Seeing the look of shock on his face, Honor smiled.  “Forgot about that, didn’t you?”
“Don’t get cocky, Kitten.   I’m in no mood.  You know what this argument is really over just like I do.  You shouldn’t BE here!”
“This is EXACTLY where I need to be,” she growled back, matching his tone as the two combatants faced each other.  “It’s MY business, Zeke.  That back there,” she continued, waving a hand toward the back of the restaurant, “is MY kitchen where I do MY work.  Seriously, if somebody said, ‘Don’t go be a Sheriff today, it’s too dangerous,’ you’d tell them that it’s your job and to check themselves into the nearest mental hospital.  Why do you think I’d feel any less dedicated to my work?”
“At the moment, nobody is gunnin’ for me,” Zeke snapped, rapidly losing his patience with the infuriating woman standing across from him.
“I wouldn’t bet on THAT,” Honor returned purposefully, looking the lawman up and down.
“Is that a threat you’re making to a sworn officer of the law, Miss McKinnon?  Because it sure sounded like one.”
Smiling that gentle sweet smile of hers that never failed to simultaneously melt his heart and harden his dick, Honor shook her head.  “Of course not, Sheriff.  Don’t be silly.  A threat implies that I might not follow through on things.  This is a promise from me to you, Zeke.  So, listen up,” she announced, going from the sugar-wouldn’t-melt-in-her-mouth tone he adored to the I-will-rip-off-your-dick-and-shove-it-where-the-sun-don’t-shine voice that never failed to get his blood pumping.
“I’m all ears, darlin’,” he replied easily, propping one hand against the counter as he leaned over it toward her.  “I do love it when you make me promises.” Honor made a noise of disgust as she shot him a look that should have frozen his blood to ice, but somehow just managed to make him hotter for her.
“Get out of my café, Sheriff, and take your Redneck Gestapo with you!  And don’t forget Deputy Hightower who’s skulking back there in the corner tryin’ his best to be invisible,” she ordered, pointing at where his uncomfortable subordinate was trying to slump in a back booth.  It was kinda hard to do when a guy was over six feet tall.
“Or what?” Zeke dared her with an insolent grin.
“Otherwise, I’m gonna be forced to bring out the pressure washer and start hosing down all the unwanted pests around this place, and I promise I’ll start with you, Sheriff Monroe.”
He could tell by the set of her jaw that she was serious.  His little Kitten had become a Tigress at some point this morning.  And damn, if that didn’t turn him on, too.
