The Last Riders #8
Jamie Begley
Releasing July 19th, 2016
Young Ink Press

As president of The Last Riders, Viper’s only fear was losing his wife. After all, he had almost lost her once before.

As wife to the president, Winter lived in fear every day: fear that a club enemy would take Viper from her, fear that one of the club women would tempt him to stray, fear that she wasn’t enough of a woman for him. One thing Winter didn’t fear was risking everything to carry her husband’s child, even her health, yet Viper refused to take the chance.

Losing hope, Winter makes one last ditch effort, determined to make Viper realize that some things were worth fighting for besides the club.

“Want to tell me why you threw a winning hand?”
Winter stubbornly firmed her jaw. “I was tired of playing.” She pressed her hands flat on the wall beside her head, trying to gain leverage to push herself away from Viper’s hard body. However, Viper kissed the flesh behind her ear as she felt his hand slide up her leg, bunching her dress to her waist.
“You’re never too tired to play,” Viper contradicted. “You didn’t look tired.” He took her earlobe into his mouth, nibbling on it until she used her butt to try to push him away. She only found herself pressed flatter against the wall.
“Maybe I was tired of watching Sasha look at you like it was you she was fucking,” she snarled over her shoulder.
He gave a low chuckle. “Does it matter, as long as it’s not me fucking her?”
“Yes, dammit! It does! How would you feel if Train was staring…? Never mind. I know how you would feel. You’d think it’s hot.”

“It is hot when I fuck you.”

Jamie Begley grew up in a very small, and a very rural town in Kentucky. Growing up poor was hard but she would go back if she could just to get that feeling of going to the corner and popping open a soda.

For now her days are spent writing, writing, and writing.

She would like all her fans to know one thing, “All my books are written for one purpose- the enjoyment others find in them, and the expectations of my fans that inspire me to give it my best.”

She came right at him.
Connor leaned back in his seat. Shit. You’d think five-years in the job, he’d have more discretion.
But what red-blooded man wouldn’t stare at her?
She weaved between tables, hips swaying, full-fucking-irresistible cleavage peeking out from her blouse.
He kept his eyes on his glass, even if his peripheral was having a feast.
“Hi.” Her voice was as lush as the rest of her.
He’d fucked up. She’d noticed him watching and now there’d be a confrontation. If he was compromised, then he’d be forced to take matters to the next level.
He looked up.
Mother-fucker.
Jet-black hair flowed over her shoulders. He’d seen her tug that hair from its ponytail and fluff it. Cheeky, attention-seeking minx. It hadn’t been so bad from over there. He hadn’t been able to smell her as he did now. He hadn’t known she used vanilla scented shampoo then. His fists curled. But her hair wasn’t the problem, even if he kept imagining it curled around his fist. The problem was her wide, almond-shaped eyes the color of butter warming in a pan, melting his brain.
“What?”
She flinched, smile slipping, then reached to her front. He tried to stay still, damned hard work, because she reached between those magnificent tits and pulled out a bill. “I’ll give you ten dollars if you kiss me right now?”
He glanced at the money in her hand. Un-freaking-believable. “Do I look like a gigolo to you, woman?”
“No, I imagine the scowl would be terrible for business.” She laughed, the husky sound of it had his muscles clenching. “But I saw you looking at me, and I really need you to kiss me, so if the money’s offensive, would you just do it for free?”
Kiss her for free?
It’d cost if he kissed her—no way out of that, but he’d be the one paying.
She held his gaze, then sighed and squeezed the bill back into her top. “Never mind, I must have misunderstood.”
Her big eyes went soft and sad.
Fuck, did she do that on purpose? Did anyone ever actually say no to her?
He scooted back his chair. Well, if was a kiss she wanted, he’d damned well show her how it’s done.
Her lips parted as he rose, and her head tipped back. She gulped. He was used to that. Little women like her realizing they’d bitten off more than they could chew. She probably hadn’t noticed when he’d been seated that he’d have over a foot on her.
Maybe he’d have gone slow, moved in gently, if she hadn’t demanded that last part—right now.
The cheek.
He took a step. She swallowed again. This time he let himself take in the sight of her curves—he let his gaze trail all over her.
He reached for her shoulder, but the next thing he knew he’d buried his hand in that hair he’d been fantasizing about since he clamped eyes on her.

Book Tour Grand Finale w/Giveaway: Return to Marker Ranch by Claire McEwen

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Tour Grand Finale for
Return to Marker Ranch
By Claire McEwen

We hope you enjoyed coming along with us as we got to know a little about Lori's and
Wade's stories! If you missed any of the stops, go back and check them out now...

Launch - Welcome to the Return to Marker Ranch tour!

I am so excited to launch this book into the world. It is a very emotional story straight from the heart, with some big issues and two characters with a lot of healing to do. But even though my hero and heroine go through some hard times, I feel like ultimately it’s a very uplifting book about two very strong people who learn to lean on each other, who open themselves up to love and life, and who find acceptance and happiness along the way.

Becky on Books - Interview

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Tweets are hard for a wordy writer like me! Okay, how about this:

A veteran battling PTSD. A heartbroken rancher struggling to prove her worth. And a love strong enough to heal them both, if they let it.

Nicole’s Book Musings - Excerpt

Dakota’s short, choppy gait took them quickly up the hill toward the well and the irrigation valves. The flaking gray metal of the storage tank came into view. Lori veered the mare alongside it and peeked at the gauge. And felt her heart stutter. “No…” she breathed, staring at gauge. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Mythical Books - Things You Can’t Learn From Books

In my new book, Return to Marker Ranch, Wade Hoffman is home from war, back on the family ranch, trying to figure out how to raise cattle. You’d think someone raised on a ranch wouldn’t have to learn too much about how to be a rancher. But Marker Ranch wasn’t an ordinary ranch. It was hideout for criminals, a meth lab, and a storage facility for the stolen property that Wade’s father and older brothers hid there.

Brooke Blogs - Lori Allen’s Ten Tips for Surviving a New Job

Many of us feel a little lost the first time we take on a leadership role. So Lori has put together a few tips, to help us handle the ups and downs of that transition.

EskieMama Reads - Review

"Loved the book and how it took me through what both have gone through and managed to sill love one another."

Thoughts of a Blonde - Review

"In Book 2 in her Sierra Legacy series Claire McEwen takes us back to Marker Ranch to bring us Wade’s story. It was fun to see Nora & Todd again and to see Wade continue on his journey to healing from his PTSD that we saw him start in Book 1."

23 Review Street - Review

"Return To Marker Ranch is a unbelievable story that tackles topics that really get to your heart and mind, making you feel a range of emotions. I would recommend that anyone who loves a romantic, sweet story with passion should definitely read this book!"

underneath the covers - Excerpt

“What the…” She stood up in the stirrups, trying to get a sense of the size and scope of the thing. And then she jerked Dakota to a halt at the sight of barbed wire. They’d reached the rusted old fence marking the far northern boundary of her family’s ranch. The new tank was on the other side. On Marker Ranch. The Hoffmans’ land, abandoned for the past decade.

Colorimetry - Introducing Snack the Dog

When Lori Allen, the heroine of my new book, Return to Marker Ranch, was going through a rough time, I knew she needed a special dog too. A dog who would bring her out of her protective shell and teach her what she needed to know about living. So I sent her a dog named Coyote Snack. Or Snack, for short.

deal sharing aunt - Interview

What would you like my readers to know?

My books are published by Harlequin, and sometimes I think people don’t want to give Harlequin books a chance because they assume the books will be old fashioned, or like what your grandmother read. Honestly, before I got to know Harlequin better, I felt that way! But trust me, this is not your grandmother’s Harlequin! I feel like the series I write for, Superromance, is incredibly modern. They let me take on all kinds of issues in my stories that other publishers might shy away from. I absolutely love how the editors encourage creativity and powerful writing in our books. I try to read many of the Superromance books written by other authors and I always love them, and find them far more interesting than many of the other romance novels out there. If you’d like to learn more, we have a blog at www.superauthors.com and we’d love it if you stopped by!

Wishful Endings - East of the Sierra

My new book, Return to Marker Ranch, takes place in my fictional town of Benson, California, nestled against the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada. People often ask me why I set my books out there. And the only answer I can give is “Because I love it.”

Harlie's Books - Review

"This series is fast becoming another one of my favorites. I have to admit that I live in Texas and so cowboys, etc. just aren’t that exciting for me anymore. I know, yall can kill me later but there is something about Ms. McEwen’s heroes and heroines that I can’t get enough of. She writes them with emotional depth and while, their ranches are important, each one of them is dealing with bigger issues than just ranching or horses."

Beck Valley Books - Horses and Veterans

One of my favorite parts of writing Return to Marker Ranch was researching the way that animals can help heal people. Specifically people suffering from PTSD. My hero, Wade Hoffman, has PTSD from his tours in Afghanistan. If you read the first book in this series (and you don’t have to, each book stands alone) you’ll be very familiar with Wade’s troubles!

Claire McEwen lives by the ocean in Northern California with her family and a scruffy, mischievous terrier. When not dreaming up new stories, she can be found digging in her garden with a lot of enthusiasm but, unfortunately, no green thumb.

About This Loving Feeling: Samantha Rushford’s future looks bright: the high school art teacher is getting ready to leave Mirror Lake and move to Boston with her ambitious boyfriend, and she hopes a diamond ring is just around the corner. But her past still has a hold on her—especially the bittersweet memory of her rebellious ex, who kissed her passionately before he left town without a word.   Since then, Lukas Spikonos has parlayed his rebel ways into life as an up-and-coming recording artist. When he shows up for a surprise gig at the high school prom, Sam is more dumbstruck than starstruck—he used the words of a poem she wrote about their breakup to create a number one hit. But Lukas hasn’t returned just to impress students; he’s facing some real-life responsibilities and needs Sam’s help. But she has her own unresolved issues about the life she wants to lead. Will the music—and the pull of true love and family—put their hearts back in harmony?

Exclusive Excerpt: Sam was suddenly swept away by her own students, the traitors. “Oh my God, Ms. Rushford, you know him?” one of her students asked. She only had time to shrug as they collectively pushed her forward, everyone shouting and cheering. She managed to catch Jess’s gaze from her place near the drinks, full of concern and worry. As the crowd began chanting “Ms. Rushford, Ms. Rushford,” and “Sing one song, Sing one song,” she knew she was doomed. She couldn’t disappoint her kids, seeing how excited they were at the amazing turn of events, so she allowed herself to be drawn up onto the stage. Under the spotlight and the disco ball, she found herself next to Lukas Spikonos. The splinter under her thumbnail. The water seeping into her shoes on a rainy day. The prickle in the bouquet of roses. And every other awful metaphor she could think of. She could force herself to make nice, for the sake of her kids. She had no choice. She would never spoil this for them, no matter how much she disliked him. “Hello, Samantha,” Lukas said, tossing his head a little to flick a lock of gypsy black hair out of his eyes. He played a little strum on his guitar, the spotlight bouncing off its spit-shined wood, as he casually hooked one long leg around the rung of a stool and gestured for her to take a seat on another one nearby. There went that smile again, still slightly crooked even though he could surely afford to throw millions at some dental work. She deflected the smile by glancing at the guitar. Some fancy acoustic model she knew nothing about. He had one arm draped around it, his hand hanging casually over the body. Those hands. Each long, elegant finger adorned with a hammered silver ring she knew he’d made himself. On his wrists, he wore bands of leather cords. Reluctantly, she looked up. Met his deep, searching gaze, being careful not to look too long lest it suck her in and turn her to dust. “Hi, Spike,” she said, deliberately avoiding his God-given name. “Long time no see.” “You as well, Samantha Rushford,” he said as he swept her slowly up and down, taking in every inch. “Long time no see.” Then he started the riff, that same damn one again. He crooned into the mic, his butter-soft voice spreading smoothly through the gym and trying to work its way into her heart. But failing. Gritting her teeth, she forced a frozen smile. For the kids, for the kids, she repeated to herself as every impulse begged her to reach out and strangle his beautiful neck with one of those shiny guitar strings. She crossed her arms to hide her clenched fists. For the next three minutes, life imitated art in the weirdest way as she joined him in a song about love gone bad. Their love gone bad. The pure, resonant tones of his voice seemed to vibrate clear through to her soul. Her own voice was adequate but didn’t hold a candle to the angelic quality of his. She simply carried the familiar melody as he harmonized and blended their voices together until they sounded . . . beautiful. The anguish she had written about long ago was the anguish he now sang about, carried on his face, and the very intimacy of it shook her deeply. At last the music ended. Panic swelled inside her chest. It was only a song. To believe more would be as unrealistic as believing in a child’s fairy tale. She shook her head to dissipate the spell that seemed to envelop her like the cacophony of applause and cheers sounding all around them. When the final whoops and hollers went up at the end, she took her chance and hopped off the stool. Out of the spotlight, he grabbed her by the elbow. She spun to face him. “I thought you’d want the chance to finally sing that to my face,” he said, his coffee-black eyes flashing. “Gee, thanks. I’ve been waiting six years for that. I feel so much better now.” He tugged her back under the spotlight and spoke into the microphone, “Hey kids, give your teach a hand. Her voice is so sweet it makes your heart break, doesn’t it?” Suddenly he leaned over and she realized with horror that he was going to kiss her. She politely offered her cheek while clenching her teeth but he ignored her civilized gesture. He pushed his guitar aside, wrapped one hand around her neck, then pulled her in and kissed her directly on the mouth. His lips were pliant and soft. His kiss was gentle but thorough, bold, and cocksure. He tasted like peppermint and his own unique, seductive flavor that brought unwanted memories hurling back. He pulled away and looked at her with a blank expression, as if he were actually startled by his own brash behavior. Then the wicked sparkle returned, and a wide bad-boy grin spread slowly over his face. “You arrogant bastard,” she hissed in his ear, still smiling, above the deafening uproar of the gym. She turned to go, but he reached out yet again. For a moment, they were in the shadows. His grip on her arm felt hot and tingly, probably from all the outrage coursing through her body. In the dim light she saw something raw in his eyes. She used to be attracted to precisely this exact kind of danger, this risk. That was before she’d lost a brother seven years ago. She’d learned the hard way that stable and steady was far better than a wild roller coaster ride that gave you an adrenaline rush and a headache. “Let me see you later,” he said off mic. On the stage, a handler took away the stools. The gym went black except for a lone spotlight, beckoning him for his next song. He had to go, as always. But this time, Sam wasn’t going to be the one he left behind. She shrugged out of his warm grasp, shaking her head. Then she took advantage of the darkness and slipped away. BLURB:

Scotland 1072

The Norman Conqueror robbed Steinar of Talisand of his noble father and his lands, forcing him to flee to Scotland while still recovering from a devastating wound. At the royal court, Steinar becomes scribe to the unlettered King of Scots while secretly regaining his skill with a sword.

The first time Steinar glimpses the flame-haired maiden, Catrìona of the Vale of Leven, he is drawn to her spirited beauty. She does not fit among the ladies who serve the devout queen. Not pious, not obedient and not given to stitchery, the firebrand flies a falcon! Though Catrìona captures Steinar’s attention, he is only a scribe and she is promised to another.

Catrìona has come to Malcolm’s court wounded in spirit from the vicious attack on her home by Northmen who slayed her parents and her people. But that is not all she will suffer. The man she thought to wed will soon betray her.

When all is lost, what hope is there for love? Can a broken heart be mended? Can a damaged soul be healed?

Excerpt:

As they approached the last ridge where they would begin their descent to the River Clyde, instead of the quiet she expected, men’s shouts, cries of terror and women’s screams rent the air.

Urging her pony forward, she reached the crest and slid her feet to the ground. Wide-eyed, she stared into chaos fifty feet below where two longships with dragonheads carved into their stems were belching forth silver-helmed warriors wielding axes, swords and spears.

Northmen.

The longhaired raiders shouted what sounded like battle cries as they ran across the sand toward her father’s hillfort, ruthlessly cutting down her father’s men as if butchering cattle.

Men moaned as they fell, pierced through with spears and swords, grunting their last as blood spurted from their bellies.

Unarmed servants shrieked as axes sank into their backs.

Panicked women ran in all directions, shouting for their children.

Catrìona’s heart raced and her mouth gaped as she watched the unfolding terror. She gripped the seax at her waist. “A Dhia m'anam!” God preserve us! “I must go to them!”

Angus pulled her back from the crest. “Keep away from the edge lest they see ye. The bushes provide scant cover.” Grabbing up the reins of the horses, he led them away from the ridge.

“But—” She looked toward the crest, unable to see but desperate to know if her father’s men prevailed. “I want to help…”

“Ye can do nothing fer them, milady,” Angus said in a low voice as he returned to her. “Stay down. We can only await the end of it.”

Fear of the brutal Northmen warred with the desire to help those she loved. Rising panic nearly overtook her as she remembered what she had heard of Norse raids. But what help could she offer? In the face of so many bloodthirsty warriors, she would only become another victim. Angus, sworn to protect her, might die trying to prevent her death.

With the sounds of the mayhem ringing loud in her ears, Catrìona dropped to the ground and crawled on her belly to the edge of the rise, pulling her hood over her flame-colored hair to blend with the shrubs.

Angus came to join her, lying on his stomach in the grass. “Are ye certain ye want to see this?”

Q & A with Regan Walker

What books/authors have influenced your writing?
There have been many. I love the classic historical romance authors. Kathleen Woodiwiss, Virginia Henley, Jan Cox Speas, Kathleen Givens, Heather Graham (writing many as Shannon Drake) and Penelope Williamson are among the ones I have on the shelves of my Keeper bookcase.

Tell us something you hate doing. Why?
On the list would be sitting around a crowded airport. waiting for a plane, driving in stop and go traffic and listening to a long, dull lecture. I don’t like being bored or wasting time. Generally, I’m eager to be doing something I’m passionate about.

What's your pet peeve?
In the romance area, as a reader, I have many. I even have a list: http://reganromancereview.blogspot.com/2013/07/a-readers-pet-peeves-10-that-set-me-on.html

When you are in writer mode, music or no music? If music, do you have a playlist?
Definitely music. Again, I have a list of the songs and artists on my playlist: http://reganromancereview.blogspot.com/2016/06/do-you-read-or-write-to-music-by-regan.html, but I also select specific music for each book I write. For Rebel Warrior it was the soundtrack for BBC’s A History of Scotland. When I hear that music, I am now transported back to 11th century Scotland.

Have you ever had one character you wanted to go one way with but after the book was done the character was totally different?
Never. I know my characters. The scenes might be a surprise, even the ending, but my characters do no turn out differently that I imagine them.
