Meet Cora's Seton's new SEAL of Chance Creek

Navy SEAL Clay Pickett needs a wife, fast, or he’ll lose the model sustainable community he and his friends came home to Chance Creek to build. He’s got just the woman for the job in mind: sexy, sensitive Nora Ridgeway. Too bad she’s not interested in rushing to the altar.

When Nora leaves her job as a school teacher to open a Jane Austen Bed and Breakfast with her friends—and finally get a chance to write her novel—she’s relieved to escape the escalating threats of violence from an unknown student stalker, and more than a little interested in the Navy SEAL who’s after her heart. But when trouble starts stalking her at Chance Creek, Nora begins to wonder if she’s left her past behind after all.
Can Clay and Nora find a way to be together when everything is trying to tear them apart?

Q & A with Cora Seton about A SEAL's Vow

Tell us a little about you SEAL’s of Chance Creek series.

The SEALs of Chance Creek series combines a group of ex-Navy SEALs who are trying to start a sustainable community in Montana with a group of women who are trying to re-create a Jane Austen-style existence on the same ranch. Throw in a deadline for all the men to get married by, and you get a very interesting situation with a lot going on. This series is both serious and lighthearted, sexy and suspenseful. I’m having a great time writing it.

What inspired your SEAL's of Chance Creek series?
All the books I write are set in Chance Creek, Montana, a fictional small town. I wanted to write the SEALs of Chance Creek series because I’m always wrestling with what makes up a good life, and how that fits in with what I do and how I live now. Like most people, I want to make the choices that will leave this world a better place, but I know that’s going to take more than recycling my pop cans. At the same time, my whole environment is set up to get me to spend more money and buy more things. I don’t have a lot of time to weigh my options or think ahead about the choices I make--none of us do. So like everyone else, I fly through life trying to get everything done and feel guilty all the time about how I’m doing it.

This series gives me the chance to say, “What if?” What if I pared down my possessions to almost nothing, lived in a tiny house and worked a job that would improve my community? Or what if I threw off the trappings of modern life and turned back the clock to lead a much slower, arts and literature-centric life? And of course, since this is a Chance Creek series--what if I had to get married REALLY FAST?

Tell us little about the characters in this book.
In A SEAL’s Vow, Clay Pickett is a man who is ready to settle down and build a life with the woman he loves. When he meets Nora Ridgeway for the first time, he knows she’s the one. Unfortunately, Nora is much more jaded about love and men, and the one thing she knows is that she’d going to take a lot of time to get to know a man before she gets serious about him. Unfortunately, Clay’s got 40 days to marry, or everyone will get booted off the ranch.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?
One of the hardest things to write was the scene in which Nora’s stalker catches up to her. It was probably one of the most violent scenes I’ve ever written and very emotional, as well. When I edit a book, I edit it over and over and over again, and re-reading that section so many times was difficult, too.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why? My favorite chapter to write was Nora conking Clay in the head with the paperweight when he tried to kiss her on camera. I just knew that’s exactly what she’d do in that situation because she hated the idea of being filmed.

What are your future project(s)?
A SEAL’s Pledge is coming next this fall and I’m having so much fun writing it. It’s a lighter story so far, with characters who have instant chemistry but are also polar opposites.

Now for exciting excerpt from A SEAL's Vow

“When I set my mind on a goal, I give it my all,” he said lightly.
Nora glanced up at him and found him looking back down at her. She was finding it difficult to breathe again, her ribs hemmed in by the boning of her corset, but unlike down at the creek, this had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with the man who was holding her. “Have you set your mind on a goal?” Her throat was dry, the words hard to form.
His arms tightened around her. “Yeah. I have.”
A wild hope fluttered inside her chest that he’d decided to renew his attempts to be with her. Immediately she shut it down. Clay was off limits. He needed to stay that way.
“What do you think about that?” he asked when she remained silent, their two bodies moving rhythmically together in a way that didn’t satisfy her cravings at all. Nora wanted to be closer to Clay. She wanted to push aside the heavy lapels of his redcoat uniform, unbutton his white shirt and splay her hands over his chest. She wanted to kiss him. Taste him. But she only shrugged.
“You know what my goal is, don’t you?” he whispered in her ear. Nora shivered as his breath tickled her, and she inadvertently tightened her grip on his shoulders.
“I want to be with you,” he said. “Forever.”
Nora realized she was trembling. Caught between desire and common sense, it was hard to know how to proceed. Every time she came near Clay she lost her head, but it was far too soon to talk about forever.
If Nora was ever to think of marrying Clay, she needed time to get to know him—to fall in love with him…
Because whatever this was, this warm, encompassing excitement she felt whenever Clay was near, it couldn’t be love. It had to be infatuation, or lust, or…whatever you called it when you were alone too long, and someone finally paid attention to you. Love—true love—took time to grow.
Clay refused to give her time…or rather, he didn’t have it to give.
“Nora?” Clay said softly when she didn’t answer.
“I’d like to kiss you.”

Q & A with Nina R. Schluntz

What books/authors have influenced your writing?
I grew up reading a lot of Stephen King and Dean Koontz. You just can’t go wrong with those guys.

Tell us something you hate doing. Why?
Big social events. I’m always that quiet guy who can’t get a word in. Although now I try to use it as an opportunity to “people watch” and gather info I think I could use to create a character. Ops, I probably shouldn’t say that, huh?

Share a funny incident in your life.
My husband once gave our cat an oatmeal bath. Yeah, I can’t picture it either, but he claims she enjoyed her day at the spa…

When you are in writer mode, music or no music? If music do you have a playlist
I can write anywhere. I can get interrupted mid-sentence and pick back up where I left off, hours or even days later. I don’t need a special zone of concentration to work. Before I owned a computer I would go to a local library between work shifts and jam out a few chapters. Now though, I work on my laptop at home and listen to whatever CD I’m currently into. I once wrote an entire book while playing a single song on repeat.

Have you ever had one character you wanted to go one way with but after the book was done the character was totally different.
Oh, who hasn’t? I know they say you shouldn’t let your characters run away with the story, but it happens. I guess I would be a bad director.

What’s your next project?
I’m working on a few more contemporary romance novels. This next one might have a slight hint of supernatural in it. But nothing like the science fiction books I used to write.

What's the one thing, you can't live without?
Slurpees!! I love me a good frosty Coca Cola slurpee! I have been known to drive to three different 7-11 stores in an effort to find a working machine.

What is your favorite movie (song)?
I am really big into Adam Lambert right now, anything he sings, goes right on the playlist. I flew halfway across America just to attend one of his concerts.

Your favorite book by you or another author.
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. The book terrified me when I was kid, and as an adult I still love it.

I tilted my head. “I apologize. I’ll try to do better. Is there anything else you want since we’re putting everything on the table?” She hesitated, her fingers worrying the ugly shirt she wore. “Spit it out.” “You can’t, um, you can’t mess around while we’re doing . . . while we’re together.” “Mess around?” She looked everywhere but at me. “You can’t sleep with other women. I won’t be humiliated like that.” “So what you’re saying is: I can’t fuck anyone?” Her cheeks were so red I thought her head would explode; however, she straightened her shoulders and looked right at me. “Yes.” This was too fun for me. “Yes, I can fuck around?” “No!” “No fucking,” I enunciated the last word. “No.” “You expect me to remain celibate the whole time?” I asked, now incredulous. “I will be, so I expect you to do the same.” I snorted. “I doubt it’s anything new for you.” She threw up her hands. “That’s it. You want to fuck someone? Go fuck yourself, VanRyan.”
Melanie Moreland lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-six-plus years. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them. Known as the quiet one with the big laugh, Melanie works at a local university and for its football team. Her job, while demanding, is rewarding as she cheers on her team to victory. While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys travelling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip. Melanie delights in a good romance story with some bumps along the way, but is a true believer in happily ever after. When her head isn’t buried in a book, it is bent over a keyboard, furiously typing away as her characters dictate their creative storylines to her, often with a large glass of wine keeping her company. Are you ever coming back to Sanctum?”
Her eyes flared briefly at the mention of Sanctum, but then she shut down again. “I didn’t think I could.”
Ah, yes, she was still invested in the lifestyle. “Ian didn’t revoke your membership. I asked him not to. Kori and Sarah made a plea for you. Actually, they made him cookies. My brother can be bribed.”
“Somehow I can’t see Ian Taggart being happy with me in his club. I lied to him, too.”
“You would be surprised at how reasonable Ian can be when he wants to. You should come back.” Another thought hit him. A nasty one. “Unless you joined a club in Austin.”
“No, Case. I haven’t been out trolling for strange Doms,” she said with a sigh. “I’ve been working with my brothers. They have their own insane plans, you know.”
He knew they were investigating a couple of people. Adam and Alex had been working on it. Case had stayed away. He wasn’t sure why the Lawless brothers wanted to take down StratCast Industries or why they seemed to have a hard-on for Patricia Cain, who wrote cookbooks and shit. If they wanted to take down the ice queen, who had a whole network dedicated to her telling the rest of America how shitty their taste was in everything from food to throw pillows, more power to them.
“Well, you’re welcome to come back. I know Kori and Sarah miss you. Erin’s talked about you, too. She likes any woman who’ll threaten to shoot her. Once she hears how you dealt with my rudeness, she’ll want to be your best friend.” His sister-in-law understood the need for a violent reminder every now and then. “You should see your friends. You know, I never asked you about her. About the friend you lost.”
It had been the whole reason for her lie and he’d never asked her about it. They’d been far too busy bickering over inconsequential things or ignoring each other.
“Her name was Carrie. We were roommates in college. She was very excited to be working on her first set.” Mia looked wistful, her eyes misting. “She was my first friend in college. We kind of clung together. She was from a small town and I, well, I had an odd upbringing. We kind of clicked. We roomed together until she moved to Vancouver for the show. I miss her.”
“I’m sorry, darlin’. I really am.”
She gave him a wan smile. “You know what it means to miss someone. I’m sorry about everything, Case. I really thought I was doing the right thing. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
He moved in, taking the opportunity she was giving him. They should have done this a long time ago. “And I’m sorry I made you think I didn’t want you. I did. Walking away from you every night was hard as hell. I still want you, Mia.”
She looked up at him. “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“Tell me why you looked for Theo.” He should be asking her how she’d found Theo. He knew that, but he couldn’t do it. They would be together for days. He could find that out later. Right now, he needed to find out if she wanted him, too.
“You know why.”
He did. It was the same reason he hadn’t played with a single sub since the day he’d met her. No play. No sex. No anything because no one was Mia and it seemed like she was the only woman in the damn world who could do it for him. “Because we have chemistry. Because nothing ever felt like kissing me. No sex. No intimacy. None of it ever worked the way it did with me.”
“God, you’re an arrogant man.”
He really wasn’t. It was all a front. “I’m not being arrogant. I know how you feel because I felt it, too. Why the hell do you think I lied about having a girlfriend? I haven’t touched anyone since the day I met you.”
Her eyes flared, her mouth dropping a bit. It was good to know he could shock her. “What are you trying to say, Case?”
He finally did what came naturally. He touched her, sliding his palm up her neck to cup her cheek. That was what he’d been missing. Connection. Warmth. “I think we’re going to be together for a few days. I know I’m tired of not knowing.”
He wanted to know what it felt like to cover her body with his, to have her spread and waiting and offering herself to him. To know how it felt to slide inside all that warmth. To be surrounded with her.
It wouldn’t last. It would only be for a few days, but for those days he would know what it meant to take care of her.
