BLURB:

When Aubrey Thomas, a phobic travel writer, must chose between jumping to what she considerers certain death from a skydiving static line or sinking even deeper into debt in the unemployment line, she scrambles to find someone—anyone!—who can help her overcome her debilitating fear of heights. Enter John Trelawney, a charming window washer who thinks nothing of dangling by a cable fifty stories up and claims he can cure her. Everything about John makes Aubrey nervous... including the way her heart kicks into overdrive whenever he's around. But, at the end of her rope, she takes him up on his offer. Can he really help her get over her fear of heights? Or will Aubrey find herself free falling...possibly even in love with him?

Flight Risk will be $0.99 during the tour.

Excerpt:

"Where to now?" Aubrey asked as she wadded up what remained of her lunch and deposited it in a nearby trash can.

"You'll find out when we get there."

So juvenile.

John then headed for the exit. With the midday sun rising higher in the sky, the lakefront began to toast. So did her cheeks when she watched him tug off his sweatshirt as he walked. The white fitted T-shirt he had on underneath left little to her imagination.

A tumble of excitement, exasperation, lust, and dread welled up in her as she joined him.

"You're like a kid in a man's body, you know that?"

An incredibly hot man's body.

He stopped and faced her. "And did you know that most people who suffer from phobias have a hyper-developed need for control?"

"Are you implying that I'm a control freak?"

He chuckled. "No, I'm not implying it. I'm stating it, rather explicitly."

She pointed at him. "There. You did it again."

"What?"

She quoted back what he had just said. "Who talks like that?"

He narrowed his eyes. "Well-read adults?"

Of which you seem to be neither.

She kept walking.

"What are you getting so huffy about?" with another of his penetrating stares.

After a moment of silent reflection, she replied, "I don't like not knowing where I'm going."

At this, he held out his hands as they walked along. "Did I call it, or did I call it?"

She turned and grumbled, "Jackass."

Q & A with Barbara Valentin

What books/authors have influenced your writing?
Kristan Higgins – her multi-dimensional characters are truly an inspiration. I love all of her books but Best Man (from her Blue Heron series) and My One and Only are favorites. Reading Allie Pleiter’s Blue Grass Hero taught me that the male lead can still be smokin’ hot even if he never takes his shirt off (who knew?).

Tell us something you hate doing. Why?
Housework. That’s not to say I never do it, but come on. It’s like buying a new car – as soon as you drive it off the lot, it depreciates in value. Same with housework. As soon as you’ve cleaned everything, it just starts getting dirty/messy/cluttered again.

Share a funny incident in your life.
Hmmm…so many to chose from. OK, on the night before my wedding, I was staying at my parents’ place. After the rehearsal dinner, which was held at a restaurant about 15 miles away, my folks left early so I could visit with the rest of the wedding party. My fiancĂ© had to leave not long after to pick out-of-town guests up at the airport on his way back to his apartment. One by one, the rest of our friends left. After the last one pulled out of the parking lot, I remembered that I drove to the restaurant with my parents! And this was before cells phones, so I had no way to get ahold of anyone. Luckily my best friend got to her place first and, being the dear that she is, she came all the way back and rescued me.

When you are in writer mode, music or no music? If music, do you have a playlist?
No music while I am actually writing. However, music to get me in the characters’ moods or heads while I’m doing other things is perfectly all right. For Flight Risk, I played a lot of Allison Krauss and Maroon 5. I have no valid explanation for this other than those artists got me in the right frame of mind for Aubrey and John, respectively.

Have you ever had one character you wanted to go one way with but after the book was done the character was totally different?
Yes. When I started writing Key Change (book #3 in my series), I had every intention of having Sara corrupt the stoic, wholesome Andrew, and while she did just a little, in the end, he’s the one who had the biggest impact on her.
