Excerpt:

For ten long seconds, Alexa didn’t move. Her body rooted at the foot of the bed, as the breath in her throat stilled and her knees faltered. The innocuous object rested only a few feet in front of her. A manila envelope that on any other day, in any other circumstance, would’ve been overlooked. In spite of the scattered darkness, she recognized the handwriting. Her pulse raced as a single face flashed to the forefront of her mind. A face she could never forget.

Julian Frederick.

If she were anyone else, the need to hyperventilate would have been dire, but her FBI training still reigned strong inside of her. It forced out an automatic command to slow her heartbeat and steady her breath. Panic was a natural reaction to stress. A reaction she’d learned to overcome through practice and experience. Slowly, her body obeyed and her mind cleared from the terror-induced daze. Right now, emotional distance was key. It offered her the detachment she needed to remain sharp.

This wasn’t her bedroom. It was a crime scene. Her crime scene.

Q & A with McKenna Grey & Everly Archard

What books/authors have influenced your writing?I would say that Jane Austen has probably been the greatest influence in my life. She had a way of captivating readers with her ability to balance strong heroines, a complex story, and an unforgettable hero. Who hasn’t fallen in love with Mr. Darcy or Captain Wentworth? Other authors who have influenced my writing include: Elizabeth Gaskell, Karen Marie Moning, Charlotte Bronte, Thomas Hardy, Elizabeth Hunter, J.R.R. Tolkien and J.R. Ward.

My love for romance was born through Jane Austen, and cultivated through my mom’s Silhouette Romance subscription. I can still remember to this day, the first book that opened my eyes to modern day romance.

Share a funny incident in your life.
I think one of the funniest incidents in my life was during the first few weeks after my son was born. I was beyond exhausted (as anyone who’s had a newborn knows), barely getting the time to take care of myself. One morning after a three am feeding, I decided to get ready for the day. I went into the bathroom (in the dark as I was trying not to wake the baby) and grabbed my toothbrush and toothpaste. As I began to brush my teeth I realized that the texture and flavor were off. No minty freshness, just a strange, thick texture, coating my teeth. When I looked down at the paste, I realized it was DIAPER RASH CREAM! Ugh! I was completely disgusted and mortified to say the least, but it made for a funny story later. (

What's your pet peeve?
A big pet peeve of mine is when people pretend to be perfect. I LOVE people who embrace their imperfect side. Everyone has a weakness, a failure, or a blemish they wish they could change. Embracing our imperfections and sharing them with one another helps us to relate in a genuine way. Some of my favorite characters are the ones who have the most imperfections. They can be physical or mental, but they exist.

When you are in writer mode, music or no music? If music, do you have a playlist?
MUSIC! I love to listen to music when I am writing. In fact, it’s actually a huge part of my process. The best way to describe it would be to say that music is the “soundtrack” to the story in my head. I often times will find a song and think - this would be so great during this scene. If you opened my music library, you’d see about fifty different playlists. I have specific lists that are dedicated to a particular book or series, and other lists that are for specific moods (Sexy, Sad, Survival, etc..).

Who was your favorite hero/heroine?
My absolute favorite hero would be John Thornton of North & South. He’s such a complex, intriguing, sexy man. He is also the standard to which I measure every other hero. He is dark and guarded, yet caring and thoughtful. His own desires have constantly been put second in order to care for those he loves. I especially love the way he interacts with the heroine, Margaret Hale. If you haven’t read or seen North & South you must stop what you are doing and immediately do so! The book is fantastic, but I absolutely recommend the BBC miniseries. It perfectly encapsulates the characters as they were in my head.
